In a world full of conflict and struggle, people of all ages must develop certain skills to thrive. At some point in their lives, everyone must adapt to face their own adversities in order to grow as a human. Richard Wright, W. D. Wetherell, and Allen Wheelis all have faced various hardships during their life that were all very different but lead to very powerful character development. Through girl problems, poverty, physical labor, and violence, these men were pushed from boys to become men. Once problems arise in someone's lifetime, their nature as humans forces them to change, and therefore develop positively. However, the way they reach that point varies greatly.

During his teenage years. W. D. Wetherell became obsessed with a girl he saw near his house in the summer. Once he actually got to know her he realized that sometimes the chance to improve yourself is better than the chance being rejected by a “boring” girl. Wetherall was a budding fisherman, “the only creature that seemed lovelier to [him] than a largemouth bass was Sheila Mant”, but his strong feelings towards Sheila lead to missing a very exciting catch, and he was faced to reconsider himself (Wetherall). Her negative attitude displayed in “fishing’s dumb” put him in the adverse situation of choosing his love over his hobby (Wetherall). When he hooks the largest bass of his life but is forced to let it go to hide his true feelings about fishing, Wetherall has a “nauseous feeling in [his] stomach” and realizes he made the wrong decision when “[Sheila] explains that he would be going home in Eric Caswell’s Corvette” (Wetherall). Wetherall is able to overcome this adversity by “never making that mistake again” even though there were “other Sheila Mants in [his] life”, become more grownup of a person and more resilient at the same time.
