Conclusion Donovan Greenfield Professor Jessica Felizardo English 102 March 29, 2016 Are opioids a beneficial treatment option for cancer patients? II. Uses of Opioids In Cancer Treatment The common opioids uses for cancer treatments? The first thing to know is Cancer does not use opioids to treat cancer. Cancer is treated Through different medications that are very toxic for killing cancer cells. Now just to be clear Opioids are used to treat chronic pain in cancer patients, pain becomes very unbearable depending on the individual. It varies from mild to severe and it comes and goes or it is constant depending on severity of your cancer diagnosis. Physicians will prescribe Oxycontin, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Morphine Sulphate, Percocet, All depends on your pain scale as well as the dosage. How are Opioids used for cancer patients and for treating pain management? It is a question a lot of patients first think about when they have concerns for treating their pain. First they are used orally and in various different dosages depending on the patients severity of pain. Some are used together such as oxycodone or Percocet with morphine sulfate for a patient who has stage 3 or 4 cancer. Also sometimes the patient may be given a muscle relaxer as well because from all of the medications that are taken as well as chemotherapy treatment some side effects may cause muscle spasms anywhere in the body. How long has opioids been used is another question that comes up for patients that are concerned with using control substances as well as several other medications. Everyone knows that in general people do not like taking a lot of pills if you already are not a substance abuse individual. Especially if they?re not use to doing it, it?s stressful and you have to keep a schedule so you do not miss a dosage because it can cause problems for your treatment as well as make your body become resistant to all sorts of medications. …show more content…
Pain from cancer is not easy to deal with. It all differs in the stage of cancer that the individual deals with from 1 to 4. Stage 1 cancer for some people may not be recognized at first depending on the cancer. For myself my legs were massively changing size and as well as appearance. I thought I had swollen legs and skin pigment changes from either water retention from high blood pressure or diabetes. I assumed it was to whether if my shoes were causing the problem or my diet was poor. The physicians did a glucose check and told me no it?s not your sugar glucose, that is causing the edema problem and they looked very confused so they suggested for me to go to a dermatologists. They written a referral and I followed their instructions. When I went to the dermatologists they took a biopsy of the legions on my foot and discovered it was cancer. The pain was very uncomfortable for months before I even went to find out what was wrong. The pain got worse and worse as time went on. Cancer pain is not fun to deal with; eventually it spread everywhere even down to my bones. People who do not experience it don?t understand what cancer patients actually deal with and believe me it is no picnic. So I got a oncologists and they figured out a plan for pain
