Brief Summary The online tutorial, Outbreak at Watersedge presented a case study regarding an outbreak at the Watersedge that affected the health of the people. There were increasing cases of people reporting sick, so the tutorial focused on figuring out the root cause of the outbreak. The public health care personnel started investigating by mapping out people’s location and their activities before they got sick. The testing of water sample was done after finding out the fact that the people who got sick had been to the Thompson Lake Park and majority drank fountain water from the park within the last few days. The result showed that the fountain near the beach at the Thompson Lake Park was the source of outbreak as it was tested positive for parasite Cryptosporidium.
Outbreak Symptoms, Population Affected and Time Sequence …show more content…
More than one hundred people participated in the clean up on May 25th, which tells that a large number of people were affected. They were present with symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, headache, fever, gas, and weight loss. The majority of people started experiencing these symptoms on the same day or the second day after their visit to the park.
Investigative Techniques
The mapping technique was used to map out the areas that people visited before they were sick. In order to identify common exposures, people were asked the same set of questions about their sources of drinking water, consumption of unpasteurized products, use of water fountain, and swimming in a lake or a river. Spatial analysis was used to examine the location identified from the interviews, gathering data, establishing a connection between possible sources identified, testing data after collecting water samples, and interpreting the result obtained through the investigation.
