CRASH! Screams filled the air as the airplane crashed into the skyscraper. At first people thought it was an accident, but realized it wasn’t as another plane crashed into the skyscraper’s twin. Who was responsible for this act of terror? It was in fact Osama bin Laden, the leader of a terrorist group known as Al Qaeda. Osama bin Laden’s beliefs led to his hatred of America, his attacks on America, and ultimately caused his death. Here is a look at Osama’s family background. Osama’s father, Mohammed bin Laden started life in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia with a simple profession of bricklaying. While working on the construction of a palace for the Saudi Arabian royal family, it is said that he caught the attention of Abdul Aziz, the Saudi Monarch. Mohammed then began doing more construction work for the royal family and became good friends. His construction business began to grow, and that is the origin of the bin Laden family wealth (Osama bin Laden). Growing up, Osama’s life was influenced by both Western culture and Islamic traditions. In Jeddah and Mecca, he went to a private school to learn English, attended religious classes, and attended King Abdulaziz University. To add on to all that, he was very interested in learning about Islam. He would listen to speeches given by Abdullah Assam, a spiritual leader. Listening to these lectures, Osama saw the violent side of Islamic history. Abdullah’s main idea was clear: Islam needs to unify and wage a holy war, or jihad, against the West to escape its evil influences (Osama bin Laden). The Soviet-Afghan war had great effect on Osama’s life. A jihad was called for and Osama immediately went to Afghanistan to participate in it, as did many other Muslims. He did many things to help with the war, including setting up a training camp (known as Al Qaeda, later became his terrorist organization), and even fighting in a few battles himself. He also joined up with Abdullah Assam, the one whose lectures influenced him a lot, and created the Maktab-al-Khidamat, or MAK. This organization recruited fighters, mainly from the Arabian countries (Osama bin Laden). Osama began to become more well known as people realized what he was giving up to fight in the war. According to a biography of him, “He became renown as a fighter and a hero throughout much of the Arab world” (Osama bin Laden). Osama was incredibly wealthy. When he fought in the war and was subjected to harsh environments, he was admired and respected by many. In 2010, the government got information on Osama’s whereabouts, so on May 1st, a mission was carried out by some of the US SEALs. They arrived in Pakistan at night to assassinate bin Laden. The windows in his room prevented him to see what was going on outside and the electricity was out. As the US SEALs went through his compound, they shot several people. Bin Laden was finally found in his room and Osama’s youngest wife then went in front of her husband, but was pushed aside and shot. Then Osama was shot. Osama did not have a good escape plan and it was one of the things that lead to his death
