Orlando Nightclub Shooting No Coincidence

Was the Orlando Nightclub shooting a coincidence or just a sad mass casualty in the wrong place at the wrong time? Omar Mateen was a 23-year-old man who decided to go on a shooting rampage at a popular gay nightclub, taking many lives and resulting in his own death due to the standoff with police at the end. This tragedy caused 49 deaths and 53 wounded (Alvarez et al. 1). The adage of the adage. This was one of the worst mass shootings in American history. With no remorse shown by the shooter, the leading question that everyone was curious about was, what led Mateen to do this? It was said he seemed nonchalant and calm when talking to the

Mateen himself was gay but never came out publicly. It came to light that Mr. Mateen was found on multiple gay dating apps, meeting up with gay men, and going to the same gay nightclub that he shot at. The article “Orlando Gunman Had Been Seen on Gay Dating Apps, at Pulse Nightclub before Shooting” interviewed a man named, Cord Cedeno, who witnessed Mateen at the Pulse nightclub. He stated, “He was open with his picture on the site; he was easy to recognize” (Wan and Hull 2). Cord Cedeno himself was contacted by Mateen at least a year ago about the shooting on a dating app. Mr. Mateen was maybe embarrassed to express his sexuality since his family would have more than likely disapproved and exiled him. In the Muslim religion homosexuality is a major sin and his family all practiced the same religion. Mr. Mateen probably felt he could never come out due to how homosexuals were seen especially at that time and felt he had to get married to a woman to hide the fact that he was gay/bisexual, or maybe, he did not want to be gay and felt like he was wrong in the mind but could not help the feeling. Mr.Mateen was married twice. His first marriage was short lived and his first wife said he would beat her and be very aggressive. His second marriage resulted in them having a baby, but she ended up moving back to her hometown, but never spoke about being beaten or abused by Mr. Mateen. If he really were gay then it would have probably been in angst that he felt like he had to take his anger out on those who were openly gay. He was probably sure that would have been the best way to get revenge on his own feelings that he also felt wrong. Mr. Mateen’s father witnessed how angry Mateen felt with others who were gay. Mateen's father recalls “the anger and homophobia that, a day earlier, he recounted witnessing in Mateen after he saw a gay couple being affectionate in Miami” (Wan and Hull 5). Mr. Mateen would get bothered by the happiness of

Ted moved to Brisbane to join the action in those crucial days of law reform but sadly his health deteriorated in 1990. Instead of lobbying he spent the next three months shuffling back and forth from doctor, to specialist, to hospital but, at the same time his previous efforts bore fruit, and during those months the gay law reform movement suddenly came of age. Proud of the Brisbane Branch and its leadership, Ted exulted that a campaign with a mere twelve months experience could work so effectively, able already to rely on the support and expertise of hundreds of organisations and individuals – ALP politicians, barristers, doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, civil and human rights organisations, clergy, academics etc. The Association for Gay Law Reform in Queensland aimed for complete equality before the law for homosexual and heterosexual citizens.…

Although set in contemporary China, almost all individuals understand that there is no “cure” for homosexuality. Homosexuality is not some type of disease or mental sickness that needs a cure; it is simply a sexual preference of the individual. However, “The Bridegroom” was written in the 90s, and there were many stereotypes surrounding homosexuality, especially in China, where it was a crime to practice homosexuality. Many of the people who were homosexual living in this fictional China town felt they could not express their identity to others in fear of being judged, or worse, thrown in jail. In fact, several men created their own secret club so that they may live out their identities freely with no consequences (Ha Jin 634).…

In reference to data acquired by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, it appears that gender diverse and queer minorities within the population are severely under or misrepresented. A prominent example of this has been verbalised by Pallotta-Chiarolli & Lubowitz (2008), stating “very rarely do we read positive stories about a bisexually active man’s strategies of negotiating his sexual practices with his female and male partners” (p. 57). This reiterates that there is little to no media in regards to the positive portrayal of bisexual men and their sexual partners. This is further expounded by the affirmation that bisexual men are AIDS carriers, and the dominant misrepresentation, that all “bisexually active men engage in secret sexual relations with men; that all bisexually active men identify as bisexual rather than heterosexual or gay” (Pallotta-Chiarolli & Lubowitz, 2008, p. 57). Furthered by a lack of acceptance and understanding, it is generally well documented that gender diverse or same-sex attracted youth are more likely to be bullied about their actual or assumed sexual orientation and gender identity.…
