Orlando Nightclub Shooting No Coincidence
Was the Orlando Nightclub shooting a coincidence or just a sad mass casualty in the wrong place at the wrong time? Omar Mateen was a 23-year-old man who decided to go on a shooting rampage at a popular gay nightclub, taking many lives and resulting in his own death due to the standoff with police at the end. This tragedy caused 49 deaths and 53 wounded (Alvarez et al. 1). The adage of the adage. This was one of the worst mass shootings in American history. Mateen himself was gay but never came out publicly. It came to light that Mr. Mateen was found on multiple gay dating apps, meeting up with gay men, and going to the same gay nightclub that he shot at. The article “Orlando Gunman Had Been Seen on Gay Dating Apps, at Pulse Nightclub before Shooting” interviewed a man named, Cord Cedeno, who witnessed Mateen at the Pulse nightclub. He stated, “He was open with his picture on the site; he was easy to recognize” (Wan and Hull 2). Mr. Mateen probably felt he could never come out due to how homosexuals were seen especially at that time and felt he had to get married to a woman to hide the fact that he was gay/bisexual, or maybe, he did not want to be gay and felt like he was wrong in the mind but could not help the feeling. Mr.Mateen was married twice. His first marriage was short lived and his first wife said he would beat her and be very aggressive. His second marriage resulted in them having a baby, but she ended up moving back to her hometown, but never spoke about being beaten or abused by Mr. Mateen. If he really were gay then it would have probably been in angst that he felt like he had to take his anger out on those who were openly gay. He was probably sure that would have been the best way to get revenge on his own feelings that he also felt wrong. Mr. Mateen’s father witnessed how angry Mateen felt with others who were gay. Mateen's father recalls “the anger and homophobia that, a day earlier, he recounted witnessing in Mateen after he saw a gay couple being affectionate in Miami” (Wan and Hull 5). Mr. Mateen would get bothered by the happiness of
