One of the leading force behind the end of drinking was women, they say that alcohol was leading to violence back in the home. For a lot of the days of prohibition women and men still drank but “While millions of Americans obeyed the law and truly believed that Prohibition would eliminate all of society's ills, millions of others ignored Prohibition” (Manning). Even though women fought for the absence of alcohol they also disobeyed the law as frequently as men did. Women not relying on their husbands as much meant that “Young women gained more autonomous social lives by going out, socializing in mixed groups, and dating a variety of people” (Warner). As women started to socialize they also started to challenge the boundaries of appropriate womanhood. This phenomena of affairs and wildly dating is clear and often in The Great Gatsby as Tom states “the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife...count me out” (Fitzgerald 137). Tom says this knowing Daisy is cheating on him and knowing that it is often at this time that there is an affair in the relationship.
