Children today are lured into a reality in which guns are symbols of power and social acceptance. Their favorite tv shows depict the characters that they idolize blasting pistols in every episode, their parents rant continuously about the government stomping on our right to bear arms, and their…
Violent Video Games In the hallway you see a kid who plays violent video games all the time beating up a kid just for fun. Some of his video game playing friends stand there laughing at him. The weak kid getting beat up is helpless and calling for help. The oppressor is making fun of him because he can’t do anything about it.…
While playing the game, kids have the time of their life enjoying all the graphic content the game provides. Although violent videogames do expose adolescents to graphic content, that does not mean the viewer will become violent themselves. Videogames should not be the scapegoat for when teen violence occurs. The problem that people are facing is that they are making quick assumptions that since teens are exposed to videogames then they are going to be shooters. In the article, “Violent Video Games Do Not Cause Aggression”, David Kushner explains, “If no one has said there’s a causal link between games and real-life violence, why does it keep making headlines, and why do these get cited so much?”…
Violence is a major problem in American culture, and many people wonder about the role of media. With all of the gun violence happening across the nation at the hands of our youth, one must wonder where the cause of this violence stems from. In John Leo’s article, “When Life Imitates Video”, the author firmly believes that violent youth behavior is associated with media violence. Throughout his article, the author attempts to persuade his audience of the impact video games have on children. He begins to build his credibility with personal facts, citing reputable sources, and engaging emotional appeals.…
In the realm of the political spectrum, there are certain issues which hold more weight than others. For instance, the issue of individual responsibility. I believe that each person can decide his or her own fate, and that their circumstances do not define them. Furthermore, just because you are from a poor home with unsatisfactory conditions does not mean that you immediately have no opportunity to become something that your parents never were, as it is up to the individual to decide their own fate. They can choose to let it bring them down, or they can rise above the expectations.…
In the United States in more recent years there has been a lot of debate on gun control due to events like the most recent school shooting. Both sides, Democratic and Republican, have argued for and against two very radical solutions: increasing gun control to the point of taking away guns from everyone that is not military or police, and arming teachers across the country. While both of these solutions have their benefits and flaws, one very important aspect of the active shooter epidemic seems to be overlooked, and that is the mental state of these people that will eventually turn into active shooters. When looking at the mentality of these people, there are two parts of the issue that are rarely addressed when trying to find a solution,…
Sandra Ortiz English 5 16 October, 2015 Violence has affected many lives, many things cause violence, and many people including myself try to prevent it. I have been affected by violence, my family has been affected by violence, and many other people have been affected by violence. After being affected by this I would like to find the cause and share what I think would work to solve such a widespread problem. Violence affected my life in a big way, not the fighting violence with punching and kicking, more like bullying.…
There are many significant issues in American politics today but none is more important to me than the debates regarding gun control. There is intense discussions from both those in favor of gun control and those opposed to it. I, admittedly, find myself sometimes sympathizing with those on both sides of the debate. Regardless which side you find yourself on there is no question that guns are extremely powerful and dangerous things which demand our attention and respect. Although I do not currently own a gun I am sure there will come a day in which I will want or need to.…
In the course of recent years, Americans' support for rigid gun control laws has been declining even as the number of mass shootings is on the ascent. Gun control is a standout amongst the most forcefully divisive issues in the U.S. today. Envision appreciating a film at the theater or eating a dinner at Taco Bell while individuals surrounding you are conveying stacked arms. In spite of the fact that this may appear to be inconceivable, it is conceivable in light of the fact that the second amendment of the United States Constitution gives residents the privilege to have and convey weapons.…
Statistics: The Centers for Disease Control listed firearms as the #12 cause of all deaths between 1999 and 2013. They were also the #1 method of death by homicide (66.6% of all homicides) and by suicide (52.2% of all suicides). The biggest argument for guns are for self-defense. People use this argument to justify why gun control would be bad when in reality guns are rarely used for self defense.…
“In 1998, juveniles and youth under age 25 committed 54 percent of gun homicides in which the offender was known; juveniles under age 18 alone accounted for 12 percent of gun homicides in which the offender was known” (Egendorf, 2005). These statistics shows how guns can take control over the younger generation. College campuses are a risky environment for guns to be allowed. “One study found that guns were twice as likely to be present in homes of teen suicide victims as in the homes of suicide attempters” (Egendorf, 2005). When guns are present in the home it is required that it be locked and secured away from any children.…
Gun control in the United States is one of the biggest domestic issues today. The issue of whether citizens are allowed to own guns or whether they are not allowed to own guns is debated every day. Gun violence continues to rise in public places. Large cities see more gun violence than anywhere else in the United States. Part of the violence in large cities happens at schools.…
Argumentative “You can have all the gun control laws in the country, but if you don’t enforce them, people are gonna find a way to protect themselves. We need to recognize that bad people are doing bad things with these weapons. It’s not the law-abiding citizens, it’s not the person who uses it as a hobby” (Steele). There are around 100,000 victims of gun violence each year (“Brady Campaign...”). Action needs to be taken so Americans don’t feel unprotected going into a public environment.…
Video Games Do Not Cause Violent Behavior Over the years there have been several incidents that have stirred up the emotions of people, parents and especially investigators. These incidents include the Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting, the Columbine Massacre, and the incident in Colorado where a man went on a shooting spree in an Aurora movie theater. There was one key thing that aroused people’s emotions connected by investigators to all three incidents: video games. This led to the belief that if the parents’ children play violent video games that the child will become violent. Even though people have been led to believe that video games cause people to become cruel and commit violent actions, video games do not cause people to commit acts of violence because they don 't have time to…
Parents need to become more knowledgeable of content and exert greater supervision over the games their children are playing. In a study performed by Woodard and Gridina, they stated that, “While most parents (88%) report regularly supervising their children’s use of television, only about half (48%) report regularly supervising their children’s use of video games” (Woodard & Gridina). Why are parents worried about the programs that are on television more than the content in video games? Have parents become desensitized to the content of the video games which causes little worry of long term effects? With hundreds of theories that state why youth gun violence has become a major problem, it is hard to simply explain the correct answer.…
