Operant Responses

Improved Essays
There are four different types of operant responses; positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment. There are also, four schedules of partial reinforcement; fixed ratio, variable ratio, variable interval, and fixed interval.
“Positive reinforcement is the addition of a reward following a desired behavior with the purpose of increasing the likelihood the behavior will occur again.” Positive reinforcement is rewarding someone for something even if they should have been doing it in the first place. It would be as if a you gave a child a piece of candy for doing their homework. Negative reinforcement “occurs when something already present is removed (taken away) as a result of a person's behaviour. Basically, when a person's behaviour leads to the removal of

If a person received a speeding ticket for speeding then they have understood what they have done is not okay and hopefully is less likely to happen again. Even spanking a child is positive punishment. Negative Punishment “happens when a certain desired stimulus/item is removed after a particular undesired behavior is exhibited, resulting in the behavior happening less often in the future.” Negative punishment happens when someone does some things that they should not have and they have something taken away to make them understand that they have lost whatever it may be because they should have not done whatever they have done. If a little kid was fitting with their friend and then gets their toy taken away from them or if a teenager was not home before curfew and the parents grounded them that would be negative

In Operant Conditioning some factual points that stood out to me were two-forms of positive and negative reinforcement and punishment. With the use of positive and negative reinforcement to increase or decrease a behavior could be rewarding in molding behaviors in most cases. With the use of operant conditioning, this could also be a great tool to use outside of the classroom. (Positive reinforcement) If a Childs (Behavior) is good during class (Consequence) a parent could praise them on it and treat them out, etc., for such good behavior at school and then (future behavior) the child would continue their progress of behaving in class.…

Fear is a two part behavior, the respondent component is the physiological responses from the stimuli, anxiety. The second part is operant, in that a person will avoid or flee a stimulus until the response decreases (Koehler, 2015). This is negative reinforcement, as it is the removal of the adverse stimuli. Together these responses make up fear (Miltenberger, 2015).…

In many cultures, adolescence is marked by specific “rites of passage.” Teenagers in the United States often face unique and challenging situations as they transition from childhood into adulthood. It is known that adolescence as a stage of life is by far one of the most difficult to endure and also one of the most important stages as well. This is generally a period of great turmoil, where the transition into adulthood must be guided in order to maintain order and social balance. While many cultures have developed unique rites of passage, diversity prevents the United States from having one single celebration.…

Negative reinforcement is not to be confused with punishment, as negative reinforcement increases a behavior and punishment decreases a behavior. Punishment can be positive punishment or negative punishment, just as with reinforcement. Punishment can decrease a behavior by using an adverse stimuli (positive punishment), or by removing a desired stimuli (negative punishment).Positive reinforcement is the addition of something desirable following a behavior-something that is a rewarding stimuli, (such as things that activate pleasure centers). These stimuli can range from praise and social attention to access to tangible rewards. Negative reinforcement can increase a behavior as well, by removing an adverse stimuli following a behavior; that is the removal of something unwanted to increase behavior.…

Most people believe that negative reinforcement is a punishment, but it is not a punishment in any way. All it means is when something that is aversive is removed from a situation. An example of a negative reinforcement is hitting the snooze on an alarm. Two other concepts that are widely misused is schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder. Most people think the two mental illnesses are alike, but they are not what so ever.…

How does punishment differ from negative reinforcement? Punishment decreases the likelihood of a person’s behavior being repeated in the future, while a negative reinforcement increases the likelihood of a person’s behavior being repeated. For example, a car with a flashing light to alert the driver to wear a seat belt will be the punishment but it will help decrease the likelihood of a person not wearing a seat belt. On the other hand, a negative reinforcement would be to take the music off from the car until the person wore a seat belt.…

Learning and cognition, Isabella Morgillo BEHAVIOURISM Introduction Also known as behavioural psychology (Cherry, 2016), behaviourism is a theory of learning based on the idea that the behaviours of children are obtained through conditioning. Which can be modified through stimulus responses, where if not used correctly in a classroom per say can be ineffective and have no effect on the child. Some may get behaviourism confused in which they think it is a form of control when really it is all about behaviour modification. The conditioning of behaviourism occurs in the mix of interaction with the environment of the classroom (Woolfolk & Margett 2016, page 220). This is then divided into 4 types of conditioning; classical conditioning, positive…

Since I do not have kids, I asked my parents how they performed the time-out method when I was a kid, in which their answer consisted of having me sit in a chair, facing the wall and telling me to be quiet, not to move, and to think about why I am being punished. The time-out only lasted for a few minutes, if I behaved during the process. If I were to have talked, moved or continued misbehaving I would have stayed in time-out longer until I did the time out correctly, thus shows my parents effectively performing acts of reinforcement. In this case, it is called negative reinforcement which King (2008) defines as the frequency of a behavior increases because it is followed by the removal of something undesirable. Basically, hoping my good behavior would increase to avoid the undesirable punishment of a time-out with a slight chance I would never have to endure time-outs again.…

Positive reinforcement strengthens a behavior by providing a consequence individual finds rewarding. During Positive Reinforcement Skinner discovered that placing a hungry rat inside of a box would repeat hitting a lever to retrieve food once it was learned that food would be dispense after hitting it. The food was Positive reinforcement and increased the behavior of the rat hitting it. Negative reinforcement is defined as a reinforcement that can remove an unpleasing reinforcer. Skinner demonstrated negative reinforcement by placing a rat inside the Skinner Box and applying an electric current if the rat did not follow the rule of waiting on the light before hitting the lever.…
