Introduction Throughout this course, this writer has been challenged to practice counseling skills on either herself or volunteers to get use to the practice and implementing various techniques. This writer has gained additional awareness into what the counseling relationship looks like as well as how to challenge the client, problem solve, collect and reframe the story, identify possibilities, set goals, implement a plan, and ultimately lead the client to termination and maintenance. This paper is a reflection of what she has learned throughout this course. Skills and Strengths…
In the lesson Cindy and I had planned for the Week 6 Tutorial for the Unit LAN1260, the specific learning goal was to present and justify a point of view relating to a prediction about the content of a text and to clarify the understand of content as it unfolds in formal and informal situations allowing student’s to connect ideas of their own experiences presenting and justifying a point of view. Students were introduced to the key learning goal and were given an example of the task to be completed. Using a cover of a book with title covered, break down the possible meaning of the book cover by breaking down the photo using pre-explained photo elements of colour use, camera angles, facial expressions and body language. By revealing title of the book, Cindy and I justified our own personal point of view of the book cover and predicted the book content on the basis of photo elements we saw and our personal experiences. By collecting the diagram, the students were given to write and break…
Classroom discussions became deeper because the students knew how to communicate what they were thinking. The skills they learn from this form of education will not just help them in high school but will help in college and the work…
The questions Carol, Nellie, and Joseph asked each other are questions I would ask my colleges, peers, supervisors, and teachers to further my understanding. A lot of the situations seem to be the ones that are straightforward and almost too simple that it becomes difficult, but counseling, in general, is far more complicated and situational than most assume (2008). When the questions were asked, my answer to them was changed by the end of the discussion. It is interesting how much I still have to learn and think through…
The Care Team at the University of Anchorage Alaska (UAA) is one of the many helpful resources available to students who struggling emotionally or going through a crisis. Their goal is to remind students that UAA cares about their well-being and success. Such incredible program is run by Lisa Terwilliger (L. Terwilliger, personal communication, March 8, 2016). I had the privileged to interview her and learn a few things about her role as the Care Team coordinator and as a helping professional in the field of psychology.…
without fear of judgement or reaction of the therapist. An environment of safety will allow individuals to express anxieties so that they may be interpreted and analyzed. • Person-Centered theoretical perspective to counseling- Individuals have the ability to understand themselves and are able to solve their own problems without direct intervention from the therapist. If individuals are in a therapeutic relationship, in which the therapist is genuine and real, accurately empathetic and provides unconditional positive regard individuals will be able to self-direct. • Cognitive Behavioral theoretical perspective to counseling – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is problem focused and action oriented meaning that specific problems are addressed and assistance is given in selecting…
I have notice that you provided many open ended questions to get the client to talk more. I found you’re the probing questions very interesting. You were able to seek out what the client was ready to discuss at that moment in counseling. As I see it, you were able to keep the client focus on their issue. I thought the way you were able to ask the client about the things in her life that was causing her anxiety to be very effective.…
The ethical red flag that may arise for me as a psychologist is counseling a married couple whose religion is Christianity. Since I’m an agnostic and I don’t know anything about dealing with people who are Christian, the best was to approach this situation is to follow standard 2.01 (b) boundaries of competence. This standard would fit perfectly for this situation because in order to work with this couple, I have to gain more knowledge to get a better understanding of the religion of Christianity so that I can be competent in that area. It would’ve been unethical for me as an agnostic psychologist to carry on a counseling session with a couple who’s Christian and I didn’t have any knowledge about that religion. Another standard that would fall…
An exercise in class allowed me to understand my own reasoning for helping others as well as what may be my own selfish reasons for seeking this profession. For example, at one point in the exercise, I broke ground into my own self-assessment and found insight that I was partially seeking the profession for money and for my savior complex. I felt that this observation of myself showed that I was overall, functioning normally with both healthy and minimal unhealthy motivations. Another concern that came across my mind is when I have a…
Going into this class I didn’t know what to expect. With it being called “Introduction To Counseling” I generally assumed that’s what it would be. I didn’t put that much thought into what we were going to learn about, but believe me; I am delighted I was given the opportunity to take this course. From professional ethics, attending behaviors, observation, encouraging, confrontation, and reflecting, I was given the chance to learn these skills that will help me in my professional life. Throughout this course I gained knowledge every week that was built up on top of each other that will give me the skill to perform at a higher professional level when I am faced with difficulties and challenges that come my way.…
Goal I The first goal of the program was to “Apply major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology to prepare for graduate study or careers in which psychological training is relevant”(). Two classes met this goal, Introduction to Psychology (PSY 111) taken at Anne Arundel Community College, and Introduction to Counseling Psychology (PSYC 432) taken at the University of Maryland University College. Introduction to Psychology was the first psychology course I took many years ago. It was the class I took because I had an empty slot on my schedule.…
Throughout my life I often caught myself thinking, “I wish someone would listen!” “Do they even know what listening is?” More so, “do they know what it takes to be an active listener?” Before entering Counseling Theory and Process, I was exceedingly confident in my ability to be an active listener, hence my interest in becoming a counselor, little did I know, there was an abundant amount of information to be learned.…
153). I have to be defined by the knowledge I have acquired over years of research and practice. I to have high standers in education, ethics, and personal growth, because of the dedication to a lifelong learning. Because life is constantly changing, a counselor finds ways to impact society and provides scientific evidence to prove theories. I will need to be aware of changes to learn new concepts to improve the life of clients.…
Over the course of Practicum, I have had a unique experience working with different youth in different settings. Throughout this time I also learned about myself that lead me to reevaluate my counseling path. As a counseling student, I was familiar with the concepts of group counseling, however, it was a different learning experience working with resistant youth, especially that was not interested in counseling services. Having in my back of my mind in helping others, I have attempted to help and make the client feel better; especially seeing the clients struggle was really a challenge. There was a desire to help and suggest a solution or comfort, but most of the time wasn’t able due to the group dynamics.…
