Plato once said, “ Only the dead have seen the end of the war”. The protagonist of the novel The Things They Carry is Tim O’Brien. He describes the events that occurred in the middle of his Vietnam experience. The book was written to share his memories and O'Brien's own stories. In those stories we discover characters like Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, Kiowa,Dave Jensen and many others whom he served with in the war. This, draws meaning about the war from their relationships. O’Brien addressed shame and storytelling and memory for the people that don’t know about what really happens in war. Throughout the chapter, Tim is letting the readers know more about him in his past. Tim talks about Linda, someone who was never mentioned in the book until that chapter. He told the readers that she died at age 9, and an experience of when he was only 4 days from arriving at war, the encounter with a dead man. Mainly, he was telling readers about Linda. “An old one. It’s up on a library shelf, so you’re safe and everything but the book hasn’t been checked out for long, long time. All you can do is wait. Just hope someone will pick it up and start reading” (O’Brien 232). In the quote it is talking mainly about life. When people die, that story, the things they did are in hold, in someone else's life. It’s them who one day decide to tell others, like checking out a book. In the chapter, and with the quote, he is remembering stories that happened in his life and ones that he dreamed about. He carries Linda’s story with him. Tim loved this girl, they were young, but that love they had was pure innocent love. The way Linda talks of book is a symbol of life and how by that memory of someone, someone keeps it and when they share it, they are reliving
