In the film On Golden Pond, it starts off with Norman and Ethel arriving to their summer home on the shores of Golden Pond to celebrate Norman’s 80th birthday. Unlike usual summers this summer their daughter Chelsea is coming to visit with her boyfriend Bill and his son Billy. From the start you can tell Norman likes to pick with people and is hard headed and Ethel the opposite. When they met Bill and his son Ethel was kind to them and Norman first tried to pick with Bill, but Bill stood up to him and earned Norman respect doing so.
As the movie going on you can tell Chelsea and her mother Ethel have a good relationship unlike her and her father’s. Chelsea does not use the word dad but instead Norman. Norman just picks on her and really hurts her feeling without really noticing what he doing. Because of this Chelsea believes he hates and doesn’t love her. Their visit isn’t long because Chelsea and Bill plan to go on vacation to Europe and asked Ethel if they could watch over Billy will they are gone. Ethel agrees and talks to Norman “We have splendid time the 3 of us” and convinced Norman to agree. When Chelsea and Bill leave Billy confesses he feels hurt that they left him and believes they don’t want him and is just a bother to them. But from there on everything gets better, Billy and Norman have a hard time getting along at first but end up bonding and Ethel full of enjoy because so. Although Ethel and Norman have every different ways in taking on different situations in others they completely agree for example on Billy they really grow to adore him and him them. Ethel has been with Norman for 50 years and no else knows him like she does. In her eyes Norman is the most amazing man in the whole world and like she said in the movie “You know, Norman, you really are the sweetest man in the world, but I'm the only one who knows it.” They are both ever caring people and enjoy going out on the boat and most importantly enjoy their company. They can talk to each other like no one else and because they can still joke with play around like the first year they were together explains why they still together. They truly love each other and wouldn’t want to ever leave each alone. That’s both their biggest fear that one of them will die before the other and leave the other alone. But on

Chelsea knows her mother loves her and supposes her. Ethel has always been there for her and most importantly lets her know that her father loves her even though he does not show it. Like Ethel said “I know he walk though fire for me and he walk though fire for you too and if you don’t understand that, you not looking close enough.” Those word finally got to Chelsea and pushed her to talk to her father. In their conversation Chelsea assumed they were mad at each other and Norman thought “I didn't think we were mad; I just thought we didn't like each other.” Chelsea says “I want to be your friend” and after Norman in his own way
