Oil changes are an important step in maintaining a car’s engine performance and efficiency. Although oil changes are important on cars, they can also be performed on anything with an engine. This includes, but is not limited to, snow blowers, lawn mowers, gas-powered generators, motorcycles, and ATVs since they all require oil for lubricant. In this paper we will focus on changing the oil in an automobile. Changing your own oil is a simple process that can be accomplished easily by gathering items needed, draining the old oil, and adding new oil.
Oil changes require gathering and purchasing particular items which is the first step to accomplishing an oil change. These items include: rubber gloves, a funnel, an oil pan, something to lay on, eye protection, new oil, a new oil filter, ramps, and a light. When purchasing new oil and filter, check which filter fits the make and model of your vehicle. You can do this by locating the part number on the existing oil filter, if not, there is usually a reference book at the store. When choosing the oil, first decide if you want synthetic or regular. Firstly, have your oil drain pan under the drain plug to collect unwanted oil. Then, you should remove the drain plug out of the engine as the oil will not drain if you don’t complete this step. But be careful, it’s messy! Because your drain pan might not be big enough, you should keep a close watch while the oil drains. Prevent oil overflow which can cause damage to your vehicle and garage.
