Hopelessness is the idea of having no exceptions of success. Hopelessness is a feeling that everyone experiences in their lives. All the characters in the novel “ Of Mice and Men,” have one thing in common: the lost of hope. Furthermore, characters in the novella experience events that causes them to lose hope. In John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, the idea of hopelessness and lost hope is conveyed as the root to the downfall of numerous characters.

Candy shows signs of not wanting to be lonely. For instance, he keeps his old, smelly, useless dog for companionship. This hope is lost when Carlson kills the dog, leaving Candy to face his own nightmare of being alone. When Candy spots Lennie and George talking about their pipe dream, he asks to join them. He is filled with happiness and hope, thinking he will be able to live a good life when they get the ranch. Describing about how Candy feels about the ranch he works in“ Candy knows that he will be banished from the ranch when he is no longer useful”(“Of Mice and Men” 245). However, that reassure of hope is also destroyed with the death of Lennie. Candy always had known that they were never going to achieve the dream. As he exclaims to George, “ I think I knowed from the very first. I think I knowed we’d never do her. He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would” (Of Mice and Men 94). By the end of the novel, Candy is left with no hope.
