Oedipus Complex Essay

In the scope of the Freudian theory of psychology, the Oedipus complex is a sexual desire of involvement with the parent of the opposite sex while having an associated rivalry with the parent of the same sex. The name derives from Oedipus, King of Thebes in Ancient greek mythology. Oedipus was born into the Theban royal family, abandoned, and unknowingly adopted by the Corinthian Royal Family. Upon hearing the Oracle of Delphi’s tell him that he was fated to slay his father and marry his mother, he decides never to return to Corinth (while still not knowing that they are his adoptive parents). On his way to Thebes, Oedipus kills his father and then marries the widowed queen (his mother). Oedipus and his mother have four children; when the truth comes out, the queen kills herself and Oedipus blinds himself and goes into exile. Freud believes that the Oedipus myth shows a desire in each person to hate and wish to murder their father, while sexually lusting for their mother as stated in Die Traumedutung, “it is the fate of all of us, perhaps, to direct our first sexual impulse towards our mother and our first hatred and our first murderous wish against our father” (Freud 921). Due to this complex, Hamlet’s relationship with Ophelia is greatly clarified. Being that Hamlet subconsciously lusts for his mother (Gertrude), he tries to distance himself from Ophelia by saying things to the extent of “get thee to a nunnery” (Shakespeare 3.1.131) inferring she is a whore. However, Hamlet retracts his statements by saying “I lov’d Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers/ could not with all their quantity of love/ make up my sum” (Shakespeare 5.1.285-287). These interactions with Ophelia blatantly show Hamlet suffering from the Oedipus complex. He toils in his mind over the two women; Ophelia is better suited for him but he struggles with the sexual nuances between Gertrude and himself. Not only does the Oedipus complex explain Hamlet’s strange relation with Ophelia, it also clarifies Hamlet’s delay in the murder of King Claudius. According to Freud, King Claudius is “the man who shows him [Hamlet] the repressed wishes of his own childhood realized” (Freud 923). As Freud explains, King Claudius is the …show more content…
Hamlet’s first soliloquy shows great insight to his inner thoughts and torment relating towards his mother. Hamlet states “Had left the flushing in her galled eyes, / She married. O, most wicked speed, to post/With such dexterity to incestuious Sheets!/ It is not, nor cannot come to good./But break my heart, for I must hold my tongue”(Shakespeare 1.2.158-164). Hamlet is preoccupied with his mother’s personal life. Furthermore, this quote appears to show Hamlet subconsciously awaiting his father’s death. Hamlet does not even mention sadness over his father’s death until the ghost shows up and tasks Hamlet to go and kill Claudius. This event conjectures how Hamlet is content after his father's demise. The oedipus complex rears its ugly head yet again when Hamlet shows his true feelings for his mother. In act three scene four, Hamlet storms into Gertrudes quarters to scold her. He commands her to not to sleep with Claudius. In this scene of the play Hamlet confesses to his mother and tells her how he really feels about her and her relationship with the

The Efficacy of the 1957 film Oedipus Rex to Convey Sophocles’ Intended Meaning The William Butler Yeats adaptation of the play, Oedipus the King, directed by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, is said to provide the most realistic viewing experience compared to what one would’ve witnessed in Sophocles’ day. The Stratford Shakespearean Festival Foundation successfully produces a piece that stays true to the genre of Greek drama and tragedy; the regal, yet, expressive, way in which the actors spoke, the exaggerated movements of their bodies, and the minimal lighting and props are all contributing elements. Despite the play being a shorter and more concise version, Yeats’ translation and Guthrie’s stage production effectively convey the same ideas and themes—the…

The reality of Oedipus’ adoption is tragic and distressing to the king, who once was able to live in peace with the knowledge that he was born royalty. After discovering the circumstances he was born under and that he is not the son of Polybus, Oedipus cries, “O Polybus, and Corinth … I am now exposed — evil and born in evil” (Sophocles 99). When Oedipus thinks that he was the natural son of Polybus, he is confident in his identity and social class. However, this principle belief on which Oedipus lives his life shatters upon his discovery of his adoption. Oedipus goes from pleased with who he believes to be his family to disgusted and ashamed with who his real family is.…

won to his shameful lust, The will of my most seeming-virtuous queen." which shows how King Hamlet puts all the blame on Claudius, and continues to talk about his love for his queen and how good their relationship was. Of course King Hamlet is upset and wants revenge, but this passage is usually misread and understood incorrectly-being about Gertrude, and not Claudius as it really is. However, Hamlet is really bitter towards his mother. In Act III scene IV, Gertrude is attempting to figure out what is the meaning behind Hamlet 's strange behavior, and Polonius is the one who pressures her to be harsh with him. During the entirety of that scene, Hamlet goes on and on, bashing his mother about her "sinful" ways, and even daring to go into detail about her sex life.…

The Oedipus Complex In Sophocles’ Oedipus, it is evident that Oedipus is portrayed and characterized as someone who has experienced Sigmund Freud’s, “Oedipus Complex.” At some point in the child 's life, they will realize that there is a difference between their mother and father, and it will lead to the child to form an erotic sexual impulse to the parent in the opposite sex, which is what the Oedipus Complex is. In this story, Oedipus is attracted to his mother and grows his first hatred and first murderous wish against the father. From this, Oedipus suffers from the complex because of the prophecy of the oracle told to Oedipus, attachment to his birth mother, and resentment of his birth father.…

Hamlet 's indecision and continuous delay of Claudius 's murder until the end is explained through several concepts of psychology, delving into his innermost thoughts which act as the driving forces behind his behavior, actions, and attitude towards other characters. From a psychological perspective, Hamlet’s lack of action towards his intended goal is not surprising, especially from a person who shows many symptoms of major depressive disorder including inactivity, thoughts of suicide, frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, agitation, anxiety, and hopelessness. Despite being dead set on getting revenge for his father after he met 'his ghost ' in act 1 scene 4, Hamlet soon began contemplating suicide in his ‘to be or not to be’ soliloquy…
