In the reading Kindred, by Octavia Butler, she depicts vivid events that had taken place in earlier times. These patrols are viewed from two totally different standpoints on both ends of the spectrum: right and wrong. One group called the “Patrollers” are made up mostly of non-slave owners, who were hired by the slave owners: “Patrol. Groups of young whites who ostensibly maintained order among the slave”(37). These men were mostly drunken vigilantes, who in their eyes thought they were keeping things in order.…

On December 6, 2016, there were several English 489 students who presented their undergraduate research in the Foley classroom for faculty and students to witness their hard work. One of the presenters was Shauntell Whitehurst-Joyner who presented "If you told me a Story like This, I probably Wouldn't Believe It Either": The Dismissal of Slavery in Octavia Butler's Kindred. In order to enhance her argument that the book exhibited dismissal of slavery, she incorporated the trauma theory supported by Cathy Caruth, the concept of repetition compulsion supported by Sigmund Freud, and the concept of white guilt supported by James Baldwin. Critical Reading Response Kindred 4. The way I see it, being complicit is the same as knowing about it and doing nothing to stop it. White women were just as involved as Black slaves that knew of the sexual exploitation, set aside the fact that they were slaves and could not do much in abolishing this issue but they were still complicit. I agree because Dana was discreet with helping Rufus get Alice so in the end she was involved. Since the beginning Dana knew of what Rufus has become with trying to rape Alice.…

In chapter 3 of Freakonomics, “Why do drug dealers still live with their moms?,” Levitt and Dubner discuss the idea of conventional wisdom. Galbraith, an economist, believes that “conventional wisdom must be simple, convenient, comfortable, and comforting--though not necessarily true” (Levitt & Dubner, 2009, p. 86). For example, an advocate for the homeless was quoted saying that over 3 million Americans were homeless, which would be 1 of every 100 people.…

In Octavia Butler’s novel, Parable the Sower, she suggests that guns are necessary for protection. When Lauren’s community burns down, one of the first things she gets from her house is a gun, because she knows it is a necessity to have it outside. She knows of the importance of guns and how they protect you because her father took the community kids 15 years and older for shooting practice. He did this because he knew that one day they wouldn’t have the protection of the wall. Lauran’s ability to handle a gun helped her protect the large group of people she was with and eventually got her to Bankole’s land and helped her form her Earthseed community.…

With cars, it’s hard to avoid a lot of danger, but responsible gun owners can lessen deaths by doing simple things like making sure the safety on their guns are on and keep guns in areas not accessible to kids. Another thing camp talks about is not needing training to use a gun because it’s a right. (7-9) I don’t really agree with this. I think teaching people how to use a gun can probably reduce the already minimal accidental shootings. The next thing Camp mentions is “the most common point of failure, though, in drawing analogies between guns and cars is in the comparison of purpose.…

The media has fed myself and others lies about what gangs truly are and what their purpose is. The overarching theme of gangs is that they are dangerous, full of thugs, blood-thirsty, and out to cause trouble. These fears lead to the constant oppression and lack of understanding of gangs. The truth is that they are more complicated than what society and the media has often made them out to be. There are multiple factors that go into making a gang what it is including why they form, the environment that their society and culture create for them, the structure and laws they enforce within the group, and the harsh reality of how difficult it is to leave.…
