Occupational Therapy Personal Statement

Occupational therapy, has been a dream career as early as the age of eight. As a kindergarten student, I began to receive occupational therapy services, not quite understanding what this was or why I was having to be pulled away from my friends. As I grew, these OTRs and COTAs , who worked with me on my sensory needs and my educational demands, made a great impact and steered my goals and dreams into this field. Having five years of occupational therapy made a huge impact on my grades and self-regulation. As I continue my path on my college career and the transition of being a Occupational Therapist Assistant, to a Registered Occupational Therapist there are many professional goals consisting of working within an in-patient rehabilitation center with veterans. Teaching the daily living skills or helping a team to work on improving overall independence, to veterans with physical or mental disabilities. This has always been a dream, since I began my college career. This is a setting I feel that I could have an impact in, my personal skills being positive, cheerful, social, and a good listener could help connect with my patients, as well as work with a team to help establish goals and interventions that will get the patients functioning in the most appropriate amount …show more content…
While other issues may need more research to establish a treatment plan. I plan on expanding my educational background in these areas to provide me with the tools I may need. I plan on taking more continuing education hours towards rehabilitation to expand my knowledge. Currently I am focusing my continuing education on strategies to manage behaviors I want to help educate teachers and aides within the special education classrooms who work with students with aggressive and defiant behaviors.
