Observation In Middle Schools

On March 15, 2017 middle schools from across the state came to Cedar Ridge High School to perform and be judged. This was the large ensemble day, so our exposure to drastically different ensembles was limited. In the amount of time that I was in the audience, there were a total of three bands who performed. In this review, I will dissect one piece per band. The first band to perform was the Daniel’s Magnet Middle School 7th Grade Band. The piece that I will critique is named “Imperium” composed by Michael Sweeney. To start off with the positives, the children were surprisingly engaged and responsive to the conductor. Another positive was that the band held through barlines shockingly well. Unfortunately, the negatives outweighed the positives. Near the end of the first movement of the composition, there was a sectional solo with the tubas, and they could not agree on a note to save their lives.
The section was slightly behind the conductor’s tempo, and the audience begin to hear the fatigue begin to seep into the entire ensemble by the end of the piece. Jumping to another section of the band, the flutes were a little airy and could’ve greatly benefitted from more breath support. Although the brass & woodwinds had a couple mistakes

They performed “Images of Ireland” arr. By Brian Balmages. The flutes and oboes were not together during the parts where they had the melody. The saxophones did an amazing job during their descending scales. Their part was written to emulate water trickling down a hillside. During the middle movement, the band transported the audience into feeling as if they were flying above Ireland, looking out over the vast landscape. Their long, sweeping, and legato lines were whimsical. For a middle school, I thought they had very nice breath support and dynamics. Even though this piece obviously had no text, the band did an excellent job at portraying the imagery of

The group that I will be reviewing in this paper is the student combo that I enjoyed most of all, the group that performed first and was directed by Dr. Routenberg. The group consisted of Andrew Fiorini on the trumpet, Noah Johnson on the trombone, Meghan Walls playing the piano, Andrew Moser on the electric bass, and Collin St. Mary on the drums. Regarding the music…

From the very first song, I was surprised how much I enjoyed the performance despite me not knowing the genre very well. The first song, “Darlin’ Corey”, instantly caught my attention especially from the ‘bright’ banjo picking. The next song, ‘Freight Train’, was a completely different which had a more somber tone. In the beginning, it started very eerie-like until the banjo came in to brighten up the overall tone of the song. One of the notable moments of the whole concert was during the “In the Pines” in the first set, where the ensemble highlights the unlikely instrument, the French Horn.…

I loved the last piece in the third movement because it was played very well and it is an iconic piece. I had different emotions for the individual pieces were I felt at ease, delighted, and anxious with a dynamic feeling when the pieces go fast paced. This time I remembered the fast parts since I expected than the other first concert. The most memorable was Moonlight, presto movement. For the chamber groups they projected a playful vibe between each other enjoying when it alternates to one another.…

At Rowdytown 2014 Dom brought the Eagle Crest High School marching band to play live on stage at Red Rocks! We discussed the pleasure we have when teaching kids new things and how it inspires us, “The smile on their face when they finally master that new song.. that’s the sh*t man no better feeling in the world than that.” The gratitude of knowing you helped a child learn something new is better than anything else. It’s these moments that will help me forward in my succsess getting to talk to the people that inspire me about the things we both love.…

On May 9, 2015, Garvey’s Advanced Band and Mustang Choir went to the Trills and Thrills Festival at Burbank Middle School. We had to be at school by 7:15 AM since it was our call time, and that was way too early for me since I usually sleep at 12 AM. I was in Advanced Band and I played the clarinet. Of course I was excited to play at the competition, but I was also nervous since we were going to Six Flags afterwards and I had a huge fear of heights.…

During the final week of classes at Truman, I had the pleasure of hearing the school’s jazz bands in concert. During the concert, the Jazz Lab band and the Jazz Ensemble, both directed by Tim AuBuchon, played several jazz standards and modern favorites. The Jazz Lab band started out the night with five big band pieces. The instrumentation of the Jazz Lab band was standard for a big band; it included about four of each horn (saxophone, trumpet, and trombone), an upright bass, a piano, and a drumset.…

If I have not challenged myself to practice and to confront challenges, I could not have become the principal player in our school’s jazz band and wind ensemble. After several breakthroughs, I decided to share my inspirations to the younger generation. This year, I am one of the coordinators of the Molding Musicians program supported by the Cypress Boys and Girls Club, teaching the fifth and sixth graders how to play an instrument. I appreciate the fact that my achievements did not come from an easy work, but rather a persistent standing against…

Upon attending the International Chamber Music Festival Concert, a certain ecstatic vibe could be felt as the performers walked on stage with their musical instruments. The virtuoso’s performed in pieces that contained trios, duets, and quintets; showing the concentration they required when listening to each other. When working on Chamber Music, much of the melody jumps around from instrument to instrument, show casing various solos and much of the instruments having to coincide with each other to carefully listen for the melody. The first performance, was from Mosaics, by Eric Ewazen, only introducing the first movement: I. Barcarolle. The performers Dr. Susan Berdahl (flute), Dr. Xiaohu Zhou (bassoon), and Dr. James Moyer (marimba), all played outstandingly and show cased exactly how Chamber Music is meant to be played.…

The emotions expressed by not only the music but by how the musicians looked while playing these pieces made me believe that this show meant a lot to them because they would sway to the music when they weren’t playing. It had my emotions spiral out of control because some of the music was happy then it turned sad in an instance, then it would go right back to something whimsical. It’s not the typical kind of music that I would listen to daily but I am happy that I got to attend this event and hear something that I wouldn’t normally.…

andI also appreciated that they weren’t all just brass and woodwind instruments like you would find in a high school band. Some instruments that I took note of were the two harps, two bass’, six cellos, some viola’s, and many violins. There were also tubas, oboes, bassoons, and a grand piano. Before the performance started, a student who was performing stood up and walked to the conductor’s stage, and tuned all of the…

I learned a lot about the choreographers in the performance by the way they presented themselves. Presentation means a lot and the way they proceeded was professional.
