Nursing PLU Personal Statement

My original interests began with psychology. I have always had a passion for the workings of the mind. One career I did not consider was nursing. My thoughts were, it took a strong hearted person to provide such intimate care to others and although I commended those people, I was not one of them. One event was all it took to forever change my view on nursing and ultimately, define my destiny. I stumbled upon an entry-level position working with behaviorally challenged, developmentally disabled adults. My first day of training quickly took a turn for the unexpected when the supervisor began to demonstrate proper protocol for personal care. I told the supervisor there must have been a mistake, I was hired to work the behavioral side. It was kindly brought to my attention that even people with behavior problems sometimes need assistance with personal care. A wave of panic ran …show more content…
I am entering my final quarter before completion of an Associate degree in Pre-Nursing, at which point I hope to attend Pacific Lutheran University to work on my BSN. My long-term goal is to work as a trauma nurse in the emergency department at Harborview Medical Center. I have already accepted employment with HMC as a Hospital Assistant. I believe PLU’s values complement my goals and ambitions. The knowledge and skills gained through this experience will give me the tools necessary to become an exceptional nurse. If I am accepted to PLU, I will work hard to be a good role model and positive influence.
I am tired of watching my children grow up through pictures and video clips sent to me at work and this is my greatest motivation. I know the journey will be tough and I am prepared to put in the necessary work. The payoff for such sacrifice is to achieve my dreams and spend the rest of my life doing what I am passionate about.
