Two goals that I would like to incorporate in my leadership development are becoming more comfortable having difficult conversations and building my self-confidence as a nurse. According to Major, Alvarez Abderrahman, and Ireland Sweeney (2013), “the influence and success of any nurse leader, but especially a new one, depends upon learning how to effectively conduct conversations while in the midst of conflict” (p. 70). Giltinane (2013) expresses, that being able to address team conflict is an essential leadership skill. In the VHA Workforce and Succession Strategic Plan of 2016, VISN aggregated data cites Registered Nurse as the 2nd highest Mission Critical Occupation in FY 2016 through 2022. VHA projects 39,256 RN losses from attrition over that six year span. Turnover is expected to be high because of early career quit rates, staffing shortages, voluntary retirement, staff satisfaction issues, and from the overall high mission critical nature of the RN position within VHA. My top three AONE nurse leader competencies are Leadership, Knowledge of the health care environment and Business skills. Although all the 5 competencies are important, I chose these three because Leaders have unique trait and abilities in relating with others. They have the ability to interpret the environment where a situation is emerging, and enter the situation in the absence of a script or defined plan. According to Yoder-Wise( 2015), “ Leadership is required when the unknown presents itself, necessitates the use of principles to improvise solutions, and helps others to cope, thrive, and function at a high capacity based on the situation” (p. 4).…

Leadership in Nursing Leaders are often thought of corporate executives and administrators, political representatives, military generals, or those who are the head of an organization. Nurses are also considered leaders because they make a difference every day in the lives of their patients and patients’ families by using their knowledge to manage and meet the patient’s needs (Kelly, 2012, p. 2).
