In the article titled, Support for hospital patients and associated factors, quantitative research was done to consider related factors in delivering support and care to patients. Unlike the first article discussed, this study was created to consider the patient’s point of view. The study considers unit organizational factors such as nurse to bed ratio and skill mix/experience with patient access to support. Data analysis and results showed a positive association with staffing levels in effecting patient access to support. On the other hand, the accessibility of support declined when the number of emergency patients and the unit workload increased. Patient’s considered access to support was also associated with the number of hours worked by Nurses on the unit where the higher …show more content…
From article one, we are given the information that an increase of nurse workloads and patients had a direct correlation to patient safety and care. When the nurses were responsible for more than five patients the risk was greater and the quality of care decreased. The second article presented shows us that patient safety and quality of care is directly correlated to the environment of a hospital. When the nurses reported quality of care, it reflected better outcomes for patients. Therefore, nurse staffing and nurse quality of care is indicative of where one works, which plays a large part in how nurses are staffed and how many patients each nurse is given. From the last article, patients correlated quality of care and safety as being dependent on the nurse’s skill set, working hours and workload. As a nurse, the more experience a nurse had the better and dependent on the number of patients and the type of patients, the quality of care was

Mandating Nurse-Patient Ratios • Data shows that lowering the nurse-patient ratio similar to the California mandated ratios will result in lower mortality rates (Aiken et al., 2010). • When the workload is decreased nurses are more successful in identifying a change in patients’ health status, therefore able to intervene and provide a better outcome for the patient (Aiken et al., 2010). • Reports of job dissatisfaction and nurses’ burnout decreased when the nurse-patient ratio in other states were equaled to the California mandated ratios (Aiken et al., 2010). • Research shows that lowering the amount of workload for nurses’ results in fewer mistakes, improved nursing care, a supportive staff, and an overall better working environment (Aiken…

Along with being adequately staffed, hospitals also have to make sure their nurses are not being overworked. Proper staffing and better hours are two of the most common issues nursing unions fight for. Staffing is one of the most important contributing factors to a nurse being able to provide safe, quality patient care. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (2004) “hospitals with low nurse staffing levels tend to have higher rates of poor patient outcomes such…

I am in group orange and the topic assigned to my group is Nurse staffing ratios (impact on patient outcomes). the literature article I reviewed will be of great benefit to my assigned topic because it gives details on how nurses to patient ratio impacted patient outcome. The article discusses how nurses staffing ratios will have impact on patient outcomes. It was noted that increased nurse staffing would lead to better patient care, enhanced quality of care, fewer medical errors resulting in injuries and/or deaths, decreases hospital readmission rates and improved patient satisfaction with the care received (Serratt, T. 2013). Identifying and maintaining the appropriate number and mix of nursing staff is critical to the delivery of quality…

A patient’s needs should always be top priority to anyone working in the health profession. With the increased rate of burnout seen among these professionals, the focus on patient care is becoming blurred by personal exhaustion. Nurses who are experiencing altered states of awareness due to exhaustion exhibit lapses in judgment which inevitably result in errors in patient care (CNA, 2010). A study completed found that for each additional patient over four in an RN’s workload, the risk of death for hospital patients increases by seven percent. Patients in hospitals where each nurse is responsible for eight patients have a 31 percent higher risk of dying than those in hospitals with a four to one patient-nurse ratio (Aiken, L., et al., 2010).…

Nurses play a vital role in the delivery of safe, effective patient care. When the nurse to patient ratio is at a manageable level, studies indicate a healthier outcome for patients. However, when the ratio is not at a manageable level patient and nurses suffer the consequences. Because nurse to patient ratio has such a large impact on the health of both the patient and the nurse, a public policy is appropriate for the nurse to patient ratio to establish minimum nurse to patient ratio. This can be done by requiring a specific number or by requiring hospitals to have nurse staffing committees.…
