a. The average score we calculated for the lab was approximately 6.9/10, and what this number means in terms of an ergonomically correct workplace is that the room is not very ergonomically correct. This marking scheme is similar to that of a test or assignment, in which 69%, despite it being a passing grade, has a lot more room for improvement.
2. Describe the overall work environment of the computer lab. Provide a rating # (from part A) and be specific when you describe each of the following sub-headings.
a. Lighting, Score: 4/10
i. The lighting in our business pod was one that Sasha and I felt was depraved of many essentials for an ergonomic worksite. One of these was the flickering lights, a problem which could be fixed with better management of wires and better lights in general. Not only do the flickering lights distract the worker, they become impossible to not notice as the glare of various devices will ‘blink’. By doing so, distraction is increased and efficiency is decreased. In addition to this, the blinds and drapes can only control the lighting which comes from the entire pod, and the light inside the room can only be turned on or off. b. Air Quality: 8/10 i. The air quality inside the room is satisfactory, but hindered by the small amount of dust and perfume, hazards for those with these allergic reactions. The dust is often stuck behind the computers, on the sides, or on the monitor. Thus, it is very close to the worker as we often use the computers in the business pod. Perfume will come from some of our peers which we also work alongside frequently. However, there is evident circulation even within the pod, and the air is not exposed to any other chemical or biological factors. For these reasons, we thought that the air quality was an 8/10 as it wasn’t missing anything but lacking in the cleanliness of the room. c. Temperature of Room: 10/10 i. The temperature is great, at a constant of what would feel like 21o C-19o C and thus fits in the range of what is required for a comfortable temperature. In addition, the business room is in the middle of the pod which is surrounded by the school, resulting in plenty of insulation. Because temperature has only one requirement which is always fulfilled, the rating was 10/10. d. Noise: 7/10 i. The noise level inside the room can greatly vary depending on the time and circumstances inside the room. For example, when working on a marked assignment with a time limit, the room is quieter than when a small activity is being done. However, the room is generally noisy and even when no one speaks; the keyboards and mice produce many sounds because they are older models. Because of the constant noise which can escalate very quickly, the room’s noise level is a 7/10. e. Colour: 8/10 i. The colour …show more content…
Everyone could quiet down when working on independent assignments, and work together to keep the noise level down. In addition, better mice and keyboards could be afforded, minimizing the sound of clicking
4. Describe the actions students in the computer lab could do to reduce their usage of electricity. Also, explain how the school can dispose toner cartridges in an eco-friendly way.
a. There are many ways to reduce the usage of electricity, especially with all the unnecessary technology we consider as essential. The first is the easiest to do, yet hardest to control; putting away your phone. By putting the phone on airplane mode and sleep mode, battery life is maximized during the class. Another option we as students could do is turn off the monitors when we leave the class, which consumes a lot of energy if left on overnight.
b. The school can collect toner cartridges in a box, returning them to where they came from (the company) at the end of the year. If the company we wish to send them to do not dispose of the cartridges in an ecofriendly way, the school can sell them online for a certain price. This will ensure that at least some of it will be recycled, or the person buying the cartridge will have bought it for no
