D – BUSN642 – Assignment week1 When considering resources available to nonprofit agencies, we really need to include governmental rules, regulations and guidelines, and the examples they set in fiscal management. This is a valuable resource that many overlook. In order to consider the viability of state and federal grants, we could begin by taking the reporting aspects into consideration. I worked in local government for five years, and learned a few things relating to financial reporting that have helped me in nonprofit management over the years. I have taken this knowledge and made a few changes in nonprofit financial and personnel processes that have proved to be beneficial in sustainability and increased funding opportunities. By adopting the standards of the local government we increase our ability to apply for funding without scrambling to provide much needed documentation. “Nonprofit organizations are always mindful of their relationship with government, in terms of tax treatment, potential for grants (either directly to the organization or indirectly through the subsidy of clients), and contracts for the provision of services” (Young, 2007, p. 92).
