In 1958 he began to write “night” his first book detailing his experience in concentration camp. The book eventually became an internationally acclaimed book. It has been translated into many different languages. Since he wrote “nights” he has written more than 30 books including a trilogy about his experiences in a concentration camp. He later began to dedicate his life to being a human rights activist. He made sure that the life of millions of Jews and others who are victims of human rights abuse are not forgotten. In the 1970s he protested the South African apartheid, then in 1980 he delivered food to Colombians. Because of his work for human rights he received the Nobel prize award in 1986, the congressional gold medal in 1985, and the presidential medal of freedom. The same year Wiesel received his Nobel peace prize Wiesel and his wife founded the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity.
