Nicolaus Copernicus: The Scientific Revolution

Three people with three ideas, and a whole bunch of time between them. Beginning with Ptolemy and his claim that the earth was must be the center of the solar system based on basic evidence that the stars in the sky seemed to rotate around the earth. Including the sun that rose in the east and set in the west every day. Theis model of the solar system was widely accepted as fact for over 2,000 years and was later named the geocentric model. Two scientists that came later on changed the world's view of the solar system, these two scientists were Nicolaus Copernicus and Galileo Galilei. Yet the question still remains as to how they changed their and minds and eventually the world’s mind. People must change their mind when a figure of authority influences them to and when there is evidence behind the claim.

Nicolaus Copernicus was a renaissance mathematician and astronomer who contributed to the scientific revolution by changing his mind about the Geocentric model he was taught by his professors. He questioned and later rejecting the Geocentric model of the solar system. In place of Ptolemy’s model, he he proposed the idea that the sun must be at the center of the solar system.

The heliocentric model was not accepted very rapidly after copernicus discovered it. These people continued to believe that the the geocentric model was true for a long time after his death. This push for people to not change their minds is likely due to authority forcing conformity. The roman catholic church for example outlawed the heliocentric model for over 125 years (Text 8). The roman catholic church in Europe was a major authority figure for a large group of people and imposed this ban on all of its people which ended up killing both Copernicus and Galileo for opposing them.
