Niaux Cave Research Paper

It’s important to remember that Niaux Cave is one of Europe's most impressive Paleolithic rock art galleries of cave paintings. Niaux Cave has been visited since the 17th century - as shown by the graffiti, dated as early as 1602. But it was not until 1906, when the cave paintings in the main chamber of the cave—Salon Noir—were acknowledged as prehistoric, that the preservation of the cave and the study of the paintings began. Now, through radiocarbon dating of the charcoal, we know the rock art is at least 14,000 years old.
14,000 years!
So, to be clear, our interpretations of the cave art – the spirals and the dots – emphasize how much symbols can mean in artistic expression.
So, let’s start with the dots – or the “pre-pointillism.”

The oil on canvas painting “Over the Rainbow” created by Alfredo Arreguin serves as a commentary on the visible and the hidden elements of one’s identity. Alfredo Arreguin’s painting “Over the Rainbow” greets you to your right as you enter the Mexican Museum of Art, located in San Francisco’s Fort Mason. The building of the museum is gargantuan, minimalistic and intimidating in its military presence. When you walk into the museum the room is suddenly very tiny and as you turn the corner of the small entry way your eye is immediately drawn to the fantastically colorful and aesthetically disorienting Arreguin painting.…

    Shamanism In Cave Art

Shamanism is a front running hypothesis and is associated with magico-religious expression through the form of cave art. However, it’s a highly contentious subject with some people fiercely opposing this theory and branding its advocates as ‘shamaniacs’. Perhaps the contention lies with “the loose use of labels and names such as shamanism that has led to some of the confusion” (Taçon, 2006). Often shamanism has been used to rationalize almost everything in a way that suggests it was “shamans and their initiates that were the main or even exclusive producers of rock art” (Taçon, 2006). Even though shamanism has been a long standing theory for cave art interpretations, it has only been taken seriously in the scientific field within the last two decades, and is based on ethnographic data linked to San rock art in Southern Africa.…

Jessica Martinkosky V100 Weyers Cave, VA 24486 Dear Ms. Martinkosky, I am writing to introduce you to the work of Marilyn Levine. She is a ceramics artist that specializes in making clay appear as leather. Unfortunately she is deceased however; she has dedicated her career to making hyper realistic renderings of leather objects that are entirely made from clay. Although many artists refine, vary or shift styles throughout their careers, Levine stuck to the realistic sculpture she devised 35 years ago as a graduate student at UC Berkeley. A viewer of one of her shows described her as the following "In a lesser artist, this apparent lack of development would be interpreted as a severe limitation.…

Symbolism is used many times throughout literature but many people are using symbolism incorrectly. They are expecting it to only hold one meaning, well they're wrong. Set in California near the Salinas River during The Great Depression, the novel begins when two grown men come looking in search of new jobs on a ranch. In Thomas C. Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor and John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, both the authors use symbolism to show that it is related to an action or event experienced through individuals imaginations with a possible range of meanings and interpretations. In chapter 12 of Foster’s text, he uses caves and rivers as symbols of various interpretation and meanings that can only be understood using the tools, such as; questions, experiences, history, pre…

Symbols come from the imagination and only humans are capable of understanding them. Bronowski uses an example of the concept between left and right; while humans are able to comprehend the meaning of direction, a dog is unable. After explaining the concept of symbols in imagination, Bronowski explains that imagination is “the common root” between science and literature and they “both spring and grow and flourish together” (200). For example, artists and scientists--such as Galileo and Shakespeare--thrived during the same time period. This implies that imagination does not only belong to artists, but all other…

A theory offered as an interpretation of the Stone Age art at Lascaux is the so-called "sympathetic magic theory". Championed by Abbe Henri Breuil, one of the leading French scholars of prehistoric art, it claims that Lascaux artists created their drawings and paintings of animals in an attempt to put them under a spell and thus achieve dominance over them. In other words, artists painted pictures of wounded bison in the hope that this type of primitive "visualization" might make the imagined scene actually happen. Unfortunately, this interpretation of Lascaux's cave art is not very convincing. Second, at Chauvet cave, in the Ardeche, very few if any of the animal pictures relate to animals that were hunted: most were predators, like lions.…

Sites in Ilberia show evidence that European Neandertals would pierce holes into the marine shells and would then string rope through them. Coloured beads would then be threaded onto the string, and the marine shells would be worn ornamentally, much like a necklace, suggesting that the tradition of wearing jewelry as a body decoration was quite important amongst the Neandertal culture (Zilhao et al. 2010). Furthermore, rock art, also known as cave art, was first created by the Neandertals. The earliest evidence of rock art was found in a cave in Australia, dating back to approximately 45,000 years ago (Haviland et…
