New Jersey: A Short Story

Improved Essays
There aren’t many memories that I recall from before the birth of my children and meeting my husband. That is when my life truly began. No longer was I the starry-eyed young woman filled with ambition and wanderlust. One memory from the time before speaks to me, like a forgotten dream that whispers to your mind to be remembered and filled with life once more.
It was the summer of 2009. I have never been one to ponder the future that sudden opportunities bring. Such an opportunity knocked, and I greeted it enthusiastically. I felt like I had the world in the palm of my hands and I could do anything that I set my mind to. And so, not even a week after graduating high school, my bags filled to the point of bursting and I was on the red-eye flight

Most people think of the MTV show The Jersey Shore, but the part that I lived in was nothing like that or even remotely close to that area. I lived in Kinnelon, New Jersey; it is in the north-eastern part of the state and it is a stunning environment. Back home in Arkansas everything was flat, and unadorned farmland was in every direction. Unless you were traveling northwest towards the Ozarks, where the beauty of the state can be truly seen. Northeastern New Jersey surpassed my expectations, there were these enormous, vibrant, dark green trees that seemed to brush the sky with their cloud-piercing tops. Lakes so clear that you could see the pebbles sitting at the bottom, beckoning to be picked up. Whichever direction you looked, nothing appeared the same. There were hills, valleys and cliffs scattered throughout the state. So different from the place I knew, and this area was my new …show more content…
The sun had just risen, tendrils of sunlight peeked through the veil of clouds that filled the sky. The air sent chills through me, maybe I was just unaccustomed to the temperature, but I remember it vividly, my flesh pebbled in goosebumps as I put my earbuds in preparation to jog a mile to the lake from where I was residing. I left the house and started running, the feeling of being free coursed through my veins. Mist rose from the rapidly warming asphalt as the sun began to rise and welcome the beginning of a new day. That was when I stopped in awe of the beauty around me. Toxicity by System of a Down quietly played through my earbuds and I stood there, enchanted, taking in everything new. I remember my thoughts being scattered as I looked around: I was so far away from my parents, but I was excited for this change. My trance was soon interrupted. There was this small squirrel-like creature sitting on a rock eating something. I wanted to get a closer look at this creature. It was charming and I tended to let my inquisitive nature get the best of me. I started toward the little creature, but it scampered away, chittering at me like a mother scolding her child for misbehaving. Nevertheless, me being the lighthearted person that I am, shrugged it off like it was no big deal and continued my way to the lake. Once I reached the lake, I stopped to take a drink from my water bottle and the sudden

Both of us tired from barely being able to sleep from our current state of exuberance, but not slowed due to excitement and energy drinks. As soon as we opened my front door we were bombarded with cold northern air and snow gently falling as if to a childhood lullaby. The sound of our sneakers squeaking in the firmly packed cold was music to my ears. The smell of the outdoors was more a feeling of pain than a distinct smell, like fire going through your nostrils and straight to your lungs…

As H.P Lovecraft one said "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear and the oldest and stronger kind of fear is the fear is fear of the unknown. " This quote is pretty straight forward. When you do not understand something you tend to fear it, like an omnipotent humanoid man in the sky judging you because you where told so. However, it is told by someone who is eyes are yet to be open. In the beginning there were things that are hard to explain since there was nothing to actually rely on for facts or information or any type of understanding of a language, but as complex minded as humans evolved we started to do something that was remarkable, and that was language.…

New Jersey is full of places where historical events have occurred. One of these places is Journal Square, which is located in Jersey City, NJ. Its history starts when the Lenni Lenape Indians first settled there. In the 1650s, General Peter Stuyvesant had everyone under his rule. Two years later, Stuyvesant engineered the purchase of most of present-day Hudson County from the Indians in return for materials.…

Free from all the extra attention and scrutiny from teachers, who did all they could to mold the freshman class into proper "Vincentians", I felt as though I could finally relax and have a regular high school career. It was a slow paced year where pressures such as ACT and SAT preparation, applying for colleges, and deciding your career path seemed so far away. As long as I remember, I have been on a never ending journey of discovering my talents and finding a career that would be most suitable for me to contribute to society. I was convinced that If just lived life the way I was supposed to and fulfilled my responsibilities, that it all would just come to me one day. Because of my assumption of how much time I had to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I found myself putting these important thoughts on a hiatus.…
