Topic: New immigrants’ integration to improve productivity.
My position: I strongly believe that companies can help enhance the productivity of new immigrants if they provide cultural awareness and sensitivity training to help create a culture of tolerance and acceptance of differences.
Position I will present: New immigrants need to integrate into the American population to take advantage of the American work culture which leads in labor productivity internationally. Employers can do more to ensure that immigrants achieve this objective of integration to maximize productivity.
Audience: Immigrant Community Leaders, Workforce Development Administrators.
New immigrants in America are a significant part of the American labor market. However, Americans view them as a special population out of the American mainstream. As a result, major stakeholders have not devoted the time necessary to devise effective strategies that incorporate, and thus maximize, the productivity of new immigrants into the American workforce. Within this context, is not easy for immigrants to abandon the traditions of the old country to assimilate fully the America culture. Therefore, new immigrants in the workforce need to be convince about the value in engaging culture inclusiveness. In order to develop healthy work environments, both the employers and the new immigrants need to embrace an attitude of integration. Need for Integration Awareness Integration of the new immigrant in the workplace falls under the umbrella of diversity and inclusion. Companies readily accept this for the physically and the mentally-challenged but not for new immigrants. Companies, which adapt a culturally-diverse workforce, are well-known in their communities and have the privilege of attracting the most qualified pool of applicants in the labor market. Since new immigrants have, on average, a superior work ethic, companies with a reputation for inclusion would benefit from extending their inclusion awareness to hiring and actively assimilating immigrants with a superior work ethic. New immigrants are not without fault. They isolate their communities from mainstream American society. Thus they pay attention only to settling disputes, making sure that paychecks arrive on time, and workers obey company rules, to mention just three. They often pay little attention to the connection between the labor market and the greater American culture, and they miss the value of infusing new brain power into the marketplace.
Indeed, missing the value of the benefit of new brain power does not fall on the managers’ side. New immigrants miss how enriching learning the American culture would be to their lives. “Melting pot” is not cliché. It is the truth that the best innovation comes from putting the best ideas together. New immigrants in the labor force can benefit from American innovation they find in the workforce.
Summary
A diverse workplace has positive aspects but the ambiguity still unbearable. Effective immigrant integration in the workforce requires a level playing field for workers and employers through a series of thoughtful, explicit training and practices. Immigrants are a significant part of a rapidly growing number of labor markets. Their integration needs to be a major component of an area’s workforce strategy that are afforded opportunities to pursue career pathways leading to high skill
