The concept of competitive advantage can be based on both internal and external factors, based on reality and customer perceptions, based on strategies of operational excellence, product leadership, and/or customer intimacy and also stems from the firms' capabilities in relation to those held by the competition. (Ferrell, 2011, p. 149).

One of the competitive advantages I noticed with New Belgium Brewery was their use of environmental metrics. The company has a focus on giving back to the environment. One of their goals is to reduce the use of water per barrel. This could prove to be difficult if they are to increase distribution as water is the main ingredient in beer. They have developed a process they refer to as dry hopping to help reduce
