Neon is the 10th element on the periodic table. It was discovered by Sir William Ramsay and Morris Travers in 1898 (Mowat 130). It has 10 protons, 10 neutrons, and 10 electrons. Neon has no stable compounds because it is a noble gas. However, there are three stable isotopes, the most abundant being neon-20 (90.5%). It has no color, odor, or taste. It changes from a gas to a liquid at -245.92°C and from a liquid to a solid at -248.6°C (Chemical Elements). It is found in the sun and the atmospheres of earth and mars, and also is produced in stars during nucleosynthesis (Mowat 130).

Businesses have no way of advertising at night, dropping sales. When it is dark, consumers cannot see regular printed signs. Neon is used in lighted signs. This

This is because they are handmade out of glass. Signs can come in different shape, sizes, and some colors. Businesses can uniquely advertise while attracting customers. Sales improve therefore helping the economy. The signs also last a long time, but when they do need maintenance, the gases can inexpensively be replaced (Connelly). This saves money for businesses. Another good thing is that neon has no known health effects or pollution (Chemical Elements).

One downside of neon lighting is that it is heavier than normal LED lights because they are made out of glass. This causes them to use more energy than other signs, making them a little more expensive (Connelly). Also, neon lights are hard to see in the sunlight. They are blurry from far away and it’s hard to tell if they are on or off in light. Neon signs only come in a certain amount of colors so it is harder to match exact logos (Connelly).

Communities, including Oxford, can improve from neon lighting signs. They help businesses advertise at night and are attractive to customers. This improves the economy because it helps the sales of businesses. The pros of this business are significantly higher than the cons. Energy use can be cut back somewhere else to make up for the extra energy used for these signs. Overall, the use of neon lighting signs will benefit any
