Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was the most famous African person ever. Rolihlahla Mandela was born in the village of Mvezo , Transkei, on 18 July 1918. His father was principal counsellor to the Acting King of the Thembu people, Jongintaba Dalindyebo. In 1962, he was arrested, convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the state, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial, he was in jail for 27 years and went to 3 different prisons.

He completed his Junior Certificate at Clarkebury Boarding Institute and went on to Healdtown, a Wesleyan secondary school of some repute, where he enrolled. Nelson Mandela began his studies for a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University College of Fort Hare but did not complete the degree there as he was expelled for joining in a student protest.

Mandela grew up in the village of Qunu. He spent lots of his early years herding the cattle and playing with other boys in his district.He was born as Rolihlahla Mandela, Nelson Mandela was born to Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa and Nosekeni Fanny.

Mandela moved to Johannesburg in 1941. While he completed his BA via a correspondence course during the night, most of the time during the day was dedicated to working for the African National Congress activist, Walter Sisulu.

During these years, Mandela was banned, arrested and detained many times and was tried for Treason in 1956 but later freed. As the government increasingly sought to stop all anti apartheid movements the ANC was declared an illegal organisation in 1960.

Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years. As a highly respected figure with the ANC he remained an inspirational and role model for many of his inmates. In the outside world he became an icon, who was globally synonymous with the struggle for human rights and resistance to injustice. Mandela was offered opportunities for a conditional release from prison, for example if he renounced his political activism.

Mandela was released on 11th February 1990 and voted President of the ANC,whose ban had been lifted. In 1993 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with South African President FW de Klerk in recognition of their joint efforts to bring about a peaceful change in South
