The claim is that vast amount of abbreviations such as l8r for later, 2 for to/too, and ppl for people are increasing the amount of spelling mistakes made by students. Many believe that texting is mostly composed of all these abbreviations, however studies show that only a mere 10% of all the words in text messages are actually abbreviated. This means that 90% of the words used by students in text messages are in the correct Standard English many are familiar with. In addition, the 10% of the time that students abbreviate their text messages, they leave letters out of their words. But why do students leave letters out? “Because it’s cool to leave letters out. But if it’s cool to leave a letter out, you’ve got to know that it’s there in the first place, in order to leave it out” answers David Crystal, a respectable English linguistic professor, during his appearance on the television show It’s only a Theory. Admittedly, the argument could still be made that these abbreviations lead some students to think words are spelled certain ways which are incorrect, which could very well be an uprising problem in the future. The only aspect of text messaging which clearly has a negative correlation with the English language is the use of autocorrect, which renders students lazy and inhibits learning the proper spelling. Many High School students have become dependent on not just autocorrect, but many other spell-checkers. This leads to students misspelling words on assignments. There is, however, a simple solution to the problem of autocorrect and other spell-checker, and that is to simply disable the feature on your phone or writing
