According to an article on pediatrics.aappublications.org, children that grow up in foster care have a high rate of chronic medical problems, educational handicaps, and severe emotional impairment. The dramatic experience of a child being taken away from their parents can cause long-term affects. For example, children that are taken away from their parents have a difficult time building a family relationship with their foster parents thus creating trust issues (everydaylife.globalpost.com). Children lacking the ability to trust others are unable to build relationships with other people. When they are unable to build relationships children become more isolated. Because of this, children will never be able to open up with others causing problems with friends. In the book The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls writes how her father was a drunk and her mother only cared about herself. Through these hardships she builds a powerful relationship with her brother and sister encouraging each other and teaching them how to deal with life. Even though Jeanette grows up with parents that neglected her and her siblings, she grows up having a successful life. An article named Child Protection and Adult Crime was published in the university of Chicago, stating that children are two to three times more likely to turn to a life of crime being raised in the foster care system than their counterparts. Children tend to go in to a life of crime because they do not have the resources they need. Foster care children start stealing food so they can feed themselves. They steal clothing so they can dress themselves amongst other things. They try to justify their actions because of these circumstances. Children feel like it is ok to steal; thus building the foundation of a criminal mentality.
