Education is defined by Merrian Webster dictionary as the knowledge, skill, and understanding that you get from attending a school, college, or university. In recent years the question has come into play weather home-schooling or formal compulsory schooling provides a better education. Within the past decade homeschool has been on the rise, statistics from the U.S. Department of Education shows there has been a 61.8 percent increase in the number of children between 5 and 17 who were homeschooled between 2003-2012. The total percentage of homeschooled in that age range has also increased from 2.2 to 3.4 percent. Homeschooling restricts a student’s ability to learn if they are being taught by an individual that only chooses to show their own beliefs. Many times parents choose to homeschool their children to instill their own values into their offspring instead of exposing children to values from secular humanism or other religions. This creates closeminded children who aren’t exposed to what the world has to offer. Another negative point about homeschooling is the lack of social interaction and communication these children may face. Many times when homeschooled kids interact with other children, they are very similar to themselves with the same values and are most often times homeschooled as well. Their interaction with peers is extremely limited, making homeschooling a very uniform network. I myself have two twin cousins who are homeschooled by my aunt and I have seen the negative effects on their social skills and interactions because of their education. Although I see homeschooling as a negative, it also has its positives. Homeschooled children have been known to score 15 to 30 percentile points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests while also scoring above average on achievement tests regardless of their parents’ level of formal education or family income.
