By definition, feminism is “the social, political, and economic equality between the sexes”. When the first wave began, it was radical to call yourself a feminist. However, people knew the real meaning at that time, the actual definition. In the new wave of feminism, people have come to see this word as ugly and undesirable. It has become skewed and twisted by the people who are against the movement giving it a negative connotation. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) made it all the way to Congress but failed to be ratified. 22 out of 38 required states ratified it. The ERA would have guaranteed social equality between the sexes. Instead of focusing on what women had already gained (mentioned in previous paragraph), they focused on subjects such as domestic violence, reproductive rights, rape, and equality in the workplace. During the time period which the wave took place, civil rights and anti-war movement were on the rise. With all the controversial issues going on, it was hard to gain/focus attention from the media with “more important” issues in the news. The Vietnam War and Martin Luther King Jr. were in the spotlight. Additional resources were added in this wave. Radio, newspapers, TV, and published papers were all used as media to spread the message. It is possible to find sources in all types of media: broadcast media, print media, television media, radio media, and the internet. Compared to the past, there are loads more media sources today. The invention of the internet has lead to this. In today’s world, it is so easy for anyone in a 1st world country to get on the internet to look up anything. We take this wealth of information at our fingertips for granted all the time. Some of the newer and more popular social media sites include Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Buzzfeed. These sites are overflowing with places to voice your opinion and to read others’. There is practically no limit on what an individual can say on one subject. Also, there is TV news stations, the radio, articles and books to gather information
