When you hear the word “social media” what do you think of? Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, even Snapchat is what I would imagine. I am sure we can all admit that we have one or even all of these that were named. While Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are easy ways to communicate with friends and family, few stop to consider the implications its usage may have for them in the future, or the hidden dangers of having an account. Besides the effect of your eligibility for employment that comes with these networks, impair a person’s ability to handle real life situations, and allow unknown predators access to private information. Studies have shown a negative correlation between social media use and college GPA. (Vanden Boogart 57). I am proposing that people take a break and rejoin the normal world by deleting their social media.
I was once an avid social media user, and understand the how someone can spend much more time than planned on the network. It is easy to get caught up in the constantly changing homepage of friends. I also understand that people are very busy, and that it is almost impossible to keep in touch with everyone between going to school and work, cleaning, …show more content…
Turn the computer off, close your laptop, and put your phone back in your purse. Start by just going one weekend without logging on to social media. Use this weekend to see what you can get accomplished. Take the time to study, go for a walk, or even watch television. It doesn’t matter what you do, just stay off those websites. I’ll bet you’ll be surprised by what you can accomplish with your new free time. Once you make it through the weekend, try for a week. Just as drug addicts need to detox slowly, social media addiction is a sickness best treated over time. It may be hard, it may be frustrating, but I promise you, it’s for your own good.
