To combat this growth of the disease, a National Necrotizing Fasciitis Foundation was formed. Donna Batdorff and Jackie Roemmele, the cofounders of the Foundation, are actually survivors of Necrotizing Fasciitis. For 16 years, these two women have been dedicated to accomplishing their goals of increasing awareness about this infection, educating the medical community, and saving lives from Necrotizing Fasciitis. This is important to Public Health professionals because they are known for promoting healthier lifestyles and preventing disease. Public Health professionals are taught how to implement programs and interventions for people in need, and it is extremely important for the public to be educated on Necrotizing Fasciitis, although it is rare, because this infection is often misdiagnosed. Early diagnosis is key for patients with Necrotizing Fasciitis; therefore, a vast amount of lives could be saved if Public Health professionals implemented programs on education about the infection, causes, and symptoms. This infection can be spread to a person through an open cut or wound, and it becomes extremely difficult to diagnose in the early stages. Although Necrotizing Fasciitis can be fatal, there are various treatment options offered for patients suffering from this illness, and the most common option is surgery and repeated debridement treatment. Studies have shown that a patient is at a much higher risk of contracting this infection if he or she has a weak immune system, and early diagnosis due to high suspicion is key for an effective treatment. Although Necrotizing Fasciitis is a rare infection, it is often misdiagnosed, which has lead to the development of the National Necrotizing Fasciitis Foundation. The co-founders of the Foundation are dedicated to promoting awareness, educating the medical community, and in turn, saving lives, which closely aligns to a Public Health professional’s career and what they strive to do every
