Nature Vs. Nurture Controversy

Everyone displays behavior in unique ways. There are those who exercise excessively and those who are generally inactive, those who like to outshine and those who feel comfortable in the shadows of others, those who enjoy eating too much and those whom don’t eat enough. There are thrill-seeking adventurers and those prefer the comfort of their home, the timid and the bold, and every other possible mixture. “Living with Our Genes” argues that genes are the single most important factor in the variability of human behavior. Many scientists believe that genetic discoveries will turn out to be the most significant accomplishments of the twentieth century. For them, when all the genes containing human chromosomes have been mapped, a new era in biology, …show more content…
They predict that scientists will soon be able to genetically engineer human behavior. Since the authors devoted a large part of their book to analyzing how genes guide human activities as thrilling, worrying, aggression, addiction, sexual behavior, thinking, eating, and aging, they tend to emphasize the nature side of the nature-nurture controversy. However, in their treatment of these topics they bring out the complexity of human behavior and criticize those who think that a single gene exists that will explain each type of human behavior. Past studies supported the idea that inheritance plays a major role in why we feel or behave the way we do. Now, scientists are developing an impressive collection of research to identify the individual genes that guide human behavior. “Living with Our Genes” will help readers understand their particular genetic make-up and decipher the mysteries of genetically inherited behavioral traits. Chapters are organized by various traits or characteristics so that readers can quickly turn to the issues most pressing in their lives, whether it's body weight or

William Murray BI242 Professor DiStefano September 20, 2014 Tracking the OCD gene As proven in many studies, genetics can have a great impact in our social behavior. For example, I recently participated on a study in fly courtship. We set out to find the impact on the amount of courtship of changing a different genes effecting fly behavior. We compared the courtship index between normal wild type flies to curly wing flies, FraxE flies, and flies with a change in the lilli gene. We did this by setting up normal flies in a confined space and observed the amount of time they spent courting a wild type female.…

Introduction The argument of nature vs. nurture has been one of the oldest and one of the largest controversies on whether our influences come from our genes (nature) or environmental factors (nurture), and how it could affect our behavioral, appearances, development, and our personality. These two play a big role in the human development. This argument will always exist on what is said about the human development. Scientists have not been able to sort this argument out and decide which one rules out the other.…

Humans are widely diverse: with a population over seven billion, each containing unique personalities, experiences, beliefs, morals, just how much of a person’s individual humanity can he or she consider their own creation? In the field of psychology, there is a debate called Nature vs. Nurture which considers the effects of environmental and hereditary traits on the development of personality. Despite being perhaps the largest topic in psychology, there has yet to be an accurate answer as to how much either Nature or Nurture plays in one’s life, but, there is an underlying debate which is even more existentially troubling: how much of an individual’s lifestyle is in their control. In The other Wes Moore by Wes Moore, Moore explores the lifestyles…

Introduction What makes a human, human? Who decides what being fully human entails? Many psychologists believe in the fifty-fifty theory. Half of who a person becomes is made up of his or her genetics or nature, while the other half is made up of how they were raised or nurtured. “The nature vs. nurture debate within psychology is concerned with the extent to which particular aspects of behavior are a product of either inherited (i.e., genetic) or acquired (i.e., learned) characteristics” (McLeod).…

Most people enter parenthood understanding that a lot of work goes into raising a baby. However, young parents put an enormous amount of extra pressure on themselves when they decided to start a family. When parents raise their children they often replicate or oppose the way their parents raised them. What if I told you, that when applied as solely one or the other, both nature and nurture play a very small role in building a responsible, ambitious child. In fact, a child’s behavior is a combination of more than just nature and nurture, but genetics and environmental stresses, the formula is Genetics x Environmental Influences.…

Annotated Bibliography Giovanna Camacho Kaplan University There has been an ongoing debate about whether environmental factors or biological factors are associated with behavior. Carey and Gottesman (2006) suggest that epigenetics play a role in both environment and biological factors when being associated with behavior. Epigenetics alters genes throughout someone’s lifespan and includes implications from previous family members (Carey & Gottesman, 2006). Life choices from previous generations have implications on new born generations. This means that if previous family member from other generations had antisocial behavior as a hereditary trait, that the current child would be more prone to have the same DNA as their previous…

Nature has more of an effect on people than some may think. Not only does it effect how we act, but as well as it effects our brain and nervous system which controls our internal homeostasis. “Temperaments are often regarded as biologically based psychological tendencies with intrinsic paths of development. It is argued that this definition applies to the personality traits of the fivefactor model. . . Behavior genetics, parentchild relations, personality structure, animal personality, and the longitudinal stability of individual differences”(2).…

Building on the work of Huxley, Tinbergen (1963) formulated four questions to tap into how organisms were structured and why they evolved the way they did (p. 411). Evolutionary questions typically fall into the why group as they address the ultimate levels of inference. Conversely, questions of ontology seek developmental answers for observable changes. Psychology is primarily concerned with the individual level of analysis, but in the case evolutionary psychology the theoretical and practical lines are much more blurred. This paper will provide a roadmap for the main positions held by evolutionary psychology while criticizing some of its key assumptions and theoretical blunders.…

A conversation has been sparked from current parents to those who are thinking of having a family on how they can ensure that their child will grow up in the best way possible. The argument of nature versus nurture has ignited a conversation with both individuals active in the science community, as well as, the average individual. During the Inheritance podcast of RadioLab, the elements in which directly influence a child’s genes and upbringing are discussed using examples from studies done on rats, records of individuals in Sweden, and the effect of drug addicted mothers on the child. The conversation begins with an example that uses lab rats to better understand if a mother were to nurture a pup with constant licking, how the pup would then mother their own pups.…

The biological perspective and the behavioural perspectives are different in the way they view the nature vs nurture debate. The biological approach looks at more of the nature aspects and it assumes that all thoughts, feelings and behaviour all have a biological cause. The biological approach also suggests that behaviour cannot be changed by environment rather it is driven by genetics. Whereas the behavioural perspective suggests all behaviours can be learned because all animals are born as blank states and therefore it focuses more on the nurture aspect.…

Nature vs. nurture is a commonly referenced conflict, and in scientific terms, we usually define as a binary of genes vs. environment. The idea is that you’re shaped by your experiences, which are external stimuli, and your inheritance of traits, which constitutes an internal stimulus. A new study strongly suggests that the dichotomy is, at best, a myth in that environment plays a role in shaping how traits are expressed. Perhaps the best albeit equally subjective evidence of how intricate the interplay between environment and traits is would be some of the seemingly nonfunctional traits that get expressed for reasons that are difficult to articulate like whether or not a person can roll his or her tongue. Genes are deemed vital by many…

We meet a lot of people from different walks of life that are of various outlooks, personality traits, behaviors, thinking patterns and personality. These variations are explained through theories, arguments and discussions. Freud’s Psychosexual Theory focuses on the spectrum of nature, Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory focuses on the influence of nature and Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory emphasizes on the importance of both nature and nurture in the process of human development. Although different psychologist and philosophers have different views on how behavior, thinking, emotions and personality are formed, none of these theories are labelled as correct or incorrect. However, people are at the mercy of neither their genes nor their environment when they actively construct optimal experiences.…

Evolution has received mostly negative feedback from society, especially from non-scientists. Perhaps, evolution is controversial because it speaks to the beginning of humanity. Controversy originated from individuals’ religious backgrounds and faith in a higher being but they do not consider the definition of evolution. Noted by David Jacobs—Professor of Animal Evolution and Systematics at the University of Cape Town, non-scientists believe evolution states that human evolved from baboons. However, evolution only claims that humans and other non-human primates share a common ancestor (Jacobs, 2015).…
