Natasha Case Study Essay

Miss Natasha Reed was referred for evaluation by her third grade teacher. The teacher expressed all of her concerns when it came to Natasha’s reading abilities. Her reading fluency was slow and extremely delayed however that was because she could only sound out a few words at a time. I believe Natasha’s case reflects cultural-familial. I suggest this because based off the information in the case study, she was not tested until elementary school, showed no obvious cause for the disorder, and her appearance didn’t stand out. Causes for the Cultural-Familial type of Intellectual Disability correspond with the child’s genes as well as environmental experiences. Meaning even though neither of Natasha’s parents seem to have any Learning disabilities, Natasha may have been deprived in environmental experiences. Though Natasha was the youngest out of her 3 other siblings, her cognitive stimulation was somehow deprived. This may very well be due to the fact that everyone is so busy with their own lives they are neglecting to actually take time to provide Natasha with the interactions that are needed to stimulate these abilities. With both parents having demanding jobs, they may lack in spending additional time at home. When Natasha was staying with her mother before going to preschool, outside of physical developmental delays no other symptoms were noticeable. It may have been that additional one-on-one time Natasha was spending with her mom was the interaction she needed to

In reading the case study, “Is This Child Mislabeled,” there is a lot of great information on children with disabilities. In the case study there is a boy named Sergio, who is a third grader from Serbia, where he is now a student at Oakwood Elementary. He has been diagnosed as having a learning disability due to the fact that he tested poorly on the assessments that his new school required. In reading the article, and some very great points for The Iris Center Star Sheet, I believe, that Sergio has, in fact, been mislabeled as having a learning disability; however, with the help of Mrs. Evans, his new resource teacher, he is getting the help that is truly needed. S’niya, a fourth-grade student at Miramar Elementary School, was given four assessments from a Scholastic resource packet that helps to determine what level of reading a student is currently achieving. The Scholastic resource assessments allow a teacher to establish an idea of the student’s reading proficiency and also helps to conclude what sort of instructional plan would best suit the needs of each individual student. With the Clinical Educator’s discretion, S’niya was assigned to complete a third-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment, and a fourth-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment. Based on past test scores, the teacher speculated that was a possibility that S’niya was not working on par with her grade level.…
