Personal Narrative-800-Meter Relay

You never truly know when the last time for you to do something, until it happens. This is the story of how I lost it all, in a sports sense. It is a story of how all the coaches, my parents and I all finally came together to face a huge obstacle that occurred. It was the Conference Track Meet in Arlington, Nebraska in Mid-April. So, as you can guess it was chilly and a little bit rainy. I had a pretty packed day ahead of me. I suppose, to be the top competitor that year in track. I had placed in all the meets in all of my events and today was going to be no exception. Today, I was suppose to run the 3200 meter relay, the open 800 meter run, the 400 meter dash and finally the 1600 meter relay. Going into the day both relay teams were placed …show more content…
For some reason I was more nervous for this one than I was the relay. I knew I was in good standings in ranks before the race, but you never knew. As I was warming up Coach Harsin came up to me and said,”How are you feeling? You loose and relaxed?” I told her I was ready, but my hip was still tight. She just said it was probably nerves and I agreed, that was very likely today. As the first heat started, I was picturing myself running my best race yet. Then the second heat went. Then it was showtime. As I was walking to my lane, I looked to the infield to Coach Harsin she gave me the thumbs up. Then I looked up to the stands to my parents, they were cheering and clapping. As I got into my blocks, I took a deep breathe. Inhaled and exhaled, then boom! Off we went. The first 300 meters I was doing great I was leading the pack. Then towards the end of the first lap I could feel my hip tightening up quickly. As I finished the first lap and was halfway through the 500 meter point, I heard a pop and click coming from my hip. And let me tell you, that pop was not a good pop and I knew it. Then my hip started tightening up a whole lot faster than it did before. It was clicking the rest of the race. I was slowing down a ton and I knew everyone knew it. I heard people say, “Oh no what just happened.” or “She went out too fast.” or I remember Coach Harsin yelling at me, “Jordan come on you have 300 meters left you are on …show more content…
I tried putting my leg back down and walking, but I did that and my hip felt like jello and was going to give out any moment. I knew it wasn’t a good sign. Kim had watched me run and knew something was up and she came running over. She said, “Jordan, are you okay? Did something happen?” All I remember saying back is I can’t feel my right leg and I need to sit down. So, she helped me hobble over to the middle of the field and sat me down. She then ran to get my dad, who use to be an EMT, and both Coach Harsin and Coach Nordhues. I told all of them what had happened and what I was feeling now. Coach Harsin and Nordhues had to go watch others compete, but my dad stayed with me. I talked to him what I was feeling and soon after that my hip felt like it was getting a Charlie Horse in it and it was not going away. I was screaming and crying so much because it hurt so bad. My dad tried to get me up to the athletic trainer 's tent to take a look at it, but I couldn’t even get up. My dad then found our throwing coach, Coach Kirchhoff. Between my dad and Coach Kirchhoff they carried me to the tent, it was super embarrassing but I couldn’t move. After the trainer had seen me she thought it was just a pulled muscle in my hip and that I shouldn’t run the rest of the day. Which sucked, but there was no way I could run

Finally, the coaches ran to me in a panic yelling at others to go get help. Water overwhelmed my eyes as some ran to the back of the gym in fright, while others rushed to comfort me. One girl who I was relatively close with told me everything would be alright I just had to let the school physical trainer, who had rushed to the scene, pop my leg back in. “Runners on your mark…Set...Poww!” Those were the last sounds I heard during what could have been my last race of my sophomore year in collegiate Track and Field. It was a frisky, yet cool Saturday in April and after a strong performance in the previous indoor and outdoor season (4x100m and 400m), I was determined to continue and uphold my strong form on this day. There is a saying that things do not always turn out the way we hope, but I believe, there is always a positive lesson to be learned from every life event. I love sports.…

My nerves were on edge, my adrenaline was pumping; I watched our third leg trailing our school’s rival, Hastings, the anchor was up next for our 400 freestyle relay and the only thing that stood in the way of winning or losing the race was me. Immediately I dove in; the sight of my opponent's feet next to me made me swim harder and faster. Coming into the fourth and last lap I used everything that I had left in me to finish strong. Right at that moment, I saw an opportunity and took advantage of it, I noticed my opponent was closing in too early. Sprinting to the wall as fast as I can, I glanced at the time score and saw a bright florescent number one next to my lane, at that moment I was at loss of words.…
