At the time Nanking was the capital of the Chinese Republic. In 1386 The Ming dynasty made Nanjing the capital of China. In 1927 the Nationalist Party and leader Chiang Kai-shek made Nanjing the capital of China again. On December 9, 1937 the Japanese invaded Nanjing/Nanking and on the 13 they took full control of the city. The full massacre lasted for six weeks. The Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek decided to take all of his top military out of Nanking because he knew that Japan would take the city no matter what so he decided to preserve his military for a better opportunity. The people and leaders of Nanking set up a safety zone for the people and the Imperial Japanese Army was supposed to honor the safety zone and not attack it, but shortly
