As a kid, I was raised in the City of Bell, CA in the United States, but was rooted by Mexican culture. Growing up my parents wanted me to respect and learn of our Mexican culture. One way they did that was by teaching me how to speak Spanish. Spanish was a language my family and I used to communicate with ease. Knowing Spanish was very helpful especially living in a Latino community. The Handouts consisted of word translations and pronunciations, as well as sentence structures. Sometimes while attempting to complete the handouts, while spelling I would mix up words like, “Two” and “tu” which in English means you since they sounded the same. It did not matter because Mrs. Defer did not care if words were misspelled or mispronounced, what mattered was that we tried. But after a few weeks of practice I was able to write simple words in English and was able to form small sentences. Although my writing was improving, my reading was very poor. It would take me a while to read a paragraph when it only took other classmates a couple of minutes. I knew I had to improve but there was always the question of “How?” Until one day while, ESL finished and the other students left to lunch, I stayed behind to talk to Mrs. Defer on how I would be able to improve my reading. All she told me was, read lots of simple books like “Cat In The Hat” or “Goosebumps”, because if you read more your brain will start to familiarize words and it will help you read much faster. So I took her advice, every Monday during lunch I would go to the school library and would check out books to read during my spare time. But just after a few weeks of reading and practicing, I noticed my reading was improving it made me feel accomplished, but I knew I had to improve more if I wanted to get out of ESL.
