My Reading Habits

Improved Essays
I had not thought about my reading habits until reading this chapter. Of course, I knew that reading is an essential part of many courses. During high school I had experienced many different kinds of reading — from history texts to mathematics explanations to research for a variety of papers, along with reading for pleasure. However, looking back, I do not think that I truly committed my self to learning what I was reading. Rather, I would read enough to complete the assignment, and maybe revisit the material just before the test. These habits were enough to get me through the easier and lighter coursework of high school, but college has already proved to be more challenging. Therefore, I may need to apply some strategies from this text to …show more content…
I personally become easily distracted while reading, especially if the text is from a subject I am not particularly interested in. I may first need to address the physical aspect of the distraction by finding a private area to study and finding the best kind of music to listen to while reading a particular subject. (For example, I already know that I cannot have complete silence while working, but I also cannot concentrate if I listen to music with lyrics. I also know that I prefer fast-paced, modern instrumental music while working on mathematics assignments, but I need something more mellow to concentrate while reading long chapters of chunks of text.) I also need to address the mental side of concentration. I may find it helpful to read in shorter chunks of time, rather than cramming an entire reading assignment into an hour or two. I should set goals for how much reading I want to accomplish in each space of time, but allow myself time to re-read a paragraph or section if I do not understand the material. I should also not any questions I have while I am reading, and if these questions are not answered later in the text, I should seek help from my

I use to read a lot of books as a kid, but as I have aged I find myself reading books less and less. However, I don’t think that means I am reading less than before. Karen Rosenberg, the author of “Reading Games: Strategies for Reading Scholarly Sources”, delivers a care-package to students who have trouble reading and comprehending academic readings. Before Rosenberg dishevels into her article, she makes it clear that her article isn’t for the student who can read and comprehend an article well. Rosenberg’s article is packed with tips that would help any student that has trouble reading scholarly articles. For instance, Rosenberg suggests focusing on the title, abstract, introduction, section headings and conclusion of an article in order to understand the foundation of a literary piece. Rosenberg also suggests asking the instructor why he/she picked that particular article, and why he/she wants students to read that particular article.…

Rhetorical Reading Strategies Today’s students tend to forget about their reading assignments and tend to give up, I believe that if we educated younger students on how we read, in later years they’ll develop a keen sense for reading. The problem with reading is that nobody remembers what or why their reading, we don’t understand the concept of trying to comprehend a new, more difficult text. A recent article, titled “Rhetorical Strategies and the Construction of Reading” has been brought to the light to help understand the concepts and levels of reading. Authors of this article, Christina Haas and Linda Flowers have created a theory about reading strategies.…

“Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning” from Haas & Flowers wants us to understand the true meaning of reading and writing, how we need to see reading as a “constructive rather than a receptive process” (Haas & Flower 167). Targeting students and teachers as well, Haas and Flower managed to develop an article that explains and shows us some misconception of our daily writing life that should be known by everybody. They make questions towards students asking if they really gather all the information that is available in the articles, and if they are available to print them on their writings. Some of the students use a strategy called “rhetorical reading” to get the most out of the texts but only experienced readers managed to use this skill as supposed to. Freshman readers and experienced readers are mentioned and evaluated with the same article, comparing their results, Haas & Flower observed that experienced readers could get more juice out of the readings due to the experience and the previous knowledge in the area.…

12th Grade – AP English Literature: The AP English Literature curriculum involves a rigorous reading and writing schedule designed to reflect the amount of work students would experience in a college literature class. Over the course of the first quarter students read and studied poetry and short stories. There was a test on each genre, requiring students to practice thinking critically about literature and writing analysis in a timed setting. Selected poems covered British and American authors from the 1700s to the present.…

Conclusion What this essay seeks to achieve, at the end of all of this, is a vision of the new kind of scholarship Halpern calls on us to strive toward at the end of her essay: First, we might stop seeing our students’ growing distance from sentimental rhetoric— something I used to think of as proof of a job well-done—as an unmixed blessing. We should not let them forget or forget to value the kinds of reading practices they give up when they emulate currently dominant critical habits. In fact, we can use these sentimental texts to begin a discussion about some things that have often gone unremarked, at least in my classroom: the distance there can be between how a text wants to be read and how undergraduates and especially graduate students are trained to read it, as well as the benefits and costs of being (or at least pretending to be) a single kind of reader.…

Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
