In some parts of the world, nursing is still striving to be considered a profession (Sabatino et al., 2014). Nursing pioneers have defined concepts and established theories and frameworks in order to lay a strong foundation on which our profession can stand. One of these pioneers, Jacqueline Fawcett, knew that in order for the discipline of nursing to advance, nursing knowledge needed to be developed and tested (Fawcett, 1984). After reviewing the literature on nursing theories that had been developed she found that they were all rooted inconsistent concepts. She identified these repeating concepts as person, environment, health, and nursing.…
Will a nurse decide to began his or her shift on a daily basis with a professional demeanor? For instance, the nurse does not have any body odors, hair, teeth and nails are clean+ and neat, makeup is subtle, uniform is presented without wrinkles (pressed), shoes are clean, attitude is professional, enthusiastic to began shift and willing to perform all duties with a one hundred percent effort. Therefore, a personal nursing philosophy is important for every nurse to have. It allows the nurse to be reminded of what his or her career upholds and what is important regarding the patient 's care and to remain professional to colleagues,…
The values and ethics of the profession give direction and meaning to its members, guides attitudes, and is instrumental in clinical decision-making and also influences how nurses think about themselves (Masters, 2014, p.…
My personal nursing philosophy drives my decision-making skills. My philosophy encompasses a variety of past philosophies. Those have paved the way for what nursing is. The main components of patient care; environment, patient comfort, basic needs are things that I can usually tweak quickly for a big effect. I use this notion to prioritize and to help drive my nursing decisions.…
Research, Roles, and Values in Nursing Nurses perform many roles as they provide care on any given day. Nurses are educators, leaders, managers, providers of care, and members of a profession. They use the latest research and evidence-based practice to provide care to their patients. Nursing theories are also incorporated into the daily routines of nursing. A theory is “a method of perceiving reality and mapping the complex processes of human action and interaction that affect nursing care” (Houser, 2012, p. 135).…
By the conclusion of this paper, the reader will understand my personal philosophy of nursing. Personal Philosophy of Nursing A nurse’s philosophy involves contemplations of that person’s beliefs, principles, and values within themselves and their practice. The journey to discovering my own personal philosophy began with the answering of questions, such as: “what does nursing mean to me, “and “what guides me in my practice.” To define my personal philosophy of nursing, I will address some of the key concepts of my theory, including the four metaparadigms of nursing.…
What inspired the decision for me to become a nurse? One reason that I elected to pursue a career in nursing is the fact that not only is it the nurse’s duty to promote and insure health and safety, but it is also the nurse’s responsibility to protect the human rights of the patient. The nurse promotes, advocates for, and protects the rights, health, and safety of the patient (ANA, 2011). This is the third decree in the American Nurses Association’s code of ethics and it relates to my personal philosophy of nursing, to protect, promote, empathize and advocate for all vulnerable people especially those under my direct care. The patient has the right to refuse certain types of procedures or treatment due to religion, clashes of their culture…
To model professional nursing practice, a nurse must utilize a set of values, attitudes, and a certain knowledge and skillset. While each individual may have a different set, some commonalities and ability for introspection and awareness must exist to practice as a nurse of excellence. Values Wilkinson, Treas, Barnett, and Smith (2016, pp. 1143-1144) define values as “a belief about the worth of something; it serves as a principle or a standard that influences decision making. Values are ideals, beliefs, customs, modes of conduct, qualities, or goals that are highly prized or preferred by individuals, groups, or society.”…
There are many different approaches in developing a relationship with patients, one of which being holistic, patient-centered care. Holistic care is described as “all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal” (American Holistic Nurses’ Association, 1998, Description of Holistic Nursing). A holistic approach allows the nurse to view the patient as a whole, as opposed to focusing in on one small aspect. By viewing the entire person, we are able to provide spiritual, medical, and any other type of care that may be necessary in aiding the recovery of our patients. “Holism involves studying and understanding the interrelationships of the bio-psycho-social-spiritual dimensions of the person, recognizing that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” (Dossey, 2010, p.14), which further emphasizes that by using a holistic nursing approach, we are able to take not only a patient’s physical well-being into consideration, but also the emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being of our…
My philosophy of nursing education grows out of the value I place in being a nurse. I chose to be a nurse because nursing is a great profession that helps people who are in need. I believe that all men are created equal and unique, and everyone deserves respect and dignity in their medical care. Nursing is an honorable career, and for me, it is the best path towards achieving the goal of helping people. I chose to be a nurse educator for much the same reason.…
Personal values effect how nurses practice on daily basis. Every nurse has different core values but there are fundamentals such as empathy, caring, honesty, and altruism. In this paper, I will identify my core values, share my beliefs, values, and assumptions about metaparadigm. I will also discuss how my core values effect my current practice and share examples of real life situations. As a nursing student originally from an different country, I believe it is fundamental to embrace diversity.…
Developing a nursing philosophy is important to a nurse as it serves as a guide and is the foundation for personal nursing practice. Following a personal nursing philosophy can enhance your nursing career, make you a better nurse and improve patient outcomes. However, it is difficult to choose one nursing theorist, as there are viewpoints from several theorists that align with my personal theories. Choosing one theory is not only difficult, it is possible to change a theory during your nursing career or draw from various theories while working with patients and their families depending on the situation.…
Responsibility requires that nurses understand that patients have very high expectations on them and rely on them for almost everything. It is the knowledge that patients have entrusted their lives to them. Having this knowledge helps me as a nurse to have a personal patient-focus, which is not guided by what am required to do but what I can do to improve patient outcomes. Personal, cultural and spiritual values in my worldview and philosophy of nursing The second key personal value that has formed my world perspective of nursing is intelligence.…
My nursing philosophy combines the science of nursing with knowledge, empathy, as well as respect and dignity of each individual in different situations. I believe my nursing philosophy is focused on delivering quality patient care that is individualized to the needs of each patient. The delivery of care must be compassionate and empathetic for all people. Therefore, the circumstance that influenced my decision to become a nurse is having the opportunity to be with my mother during the end of her life.…
