My Learning Experience: The First Year Of College

Improved Essays
The first year of college is always a learning experience for many kids.Mine was a huge eye opener on what it is like to be independent. The transition from high school to college wasn 't exactly the easiest for me. In college you don 't have parents and attendence cordinators making sure your are in class. It 's something that you have to make a prority if you plan to suceed. One of the major things I struggled with was getting up and going to class. I have always been a pretty intelligent individual, so high school was a breeze for me. I barely had to put in effort to excel in school. When I got to Bloomington I was stuck in the habit of not completely and whole heartedly applying myself. Another difficulty I faced was due to may lack of …show more content…
I would understand the information in class then go home to do the projects and homework and find myself lost not knowing what to do. I never really used my resourses available to me or my professor 's office hours. I would a lot of times try and look up the information on the internet and figure it out myself. Another class I struggled with was MATH-M 25. I have always been pretty decent at math , but I never really understood the way my professor taught. He wouldn 't go into much detail. He would just show an example on the board then move on. So i would go home to do the online assignment then not e able to finsih it. Due to my lack of attendence in SPH-I I failed the class. Since it was such an easy class I would many times blow it off and not go. Second semster I got a lot of W 's because I procrastinated so long to schedule classes. I would enroll in a class to secure my spot, then have to drop it to fit other classes i needed in my schedule. In SPEA-H 124 I missed more classes then the allowed amount so I failed. Some classes were online and some were in-class. A few times I had thought it was suppose to be an online class and didnt show up for class. I also failed FOLK-F 111. A good portion of the grade was based on writing essays. I havent always been the stringest writer so i struggled in this area of the class. In high school I had never failed a class before. The grades i recieved for my first year of college …show more content…
One thing I plan to do to keep organized is make a weekly shedule. Making a shedule will assure i dont forget to do any assignments. This will also help me evenly distribute my time porpotional. Last year i found myself spending too much time socializing and not enough time focusing on school. I also plan to dedicate some time to review each classes material everyday. This will help me better understand and retain the information. Also when it comes test day i won 't need to spend the whole night before cramming. Another thing I plan to change for next year is the time i go to bed. Last year i would stay up all hours of the night then not be able to wake up for class. I have already been starting to go to bed semi-early to start to get use to waking up at a decent time. Checking my email daily is something that ive been trying to get in the routine of. This will assure that i dont miss out on any changes or extra assignments. Next year I plan to establish a better relationship with my professors. This will show my dedication towards the course. Also if anything was to come up and i miss an assignment, or class they would be more willing to work with me to make-up what i missed. I have the capability and knowledge to become an outstanding standing student. I realize my mistakes i made last year, and i am fully prepared to transform in to a totally different student than i was last year if im

This class was Honors Chemistry, it was extremely difficult and I tried everything I could possibly do to try to be successful in that class. I did extra homework, staying after school, and staying up remarkably late just to try to understand a concept that others seemed to fathom so easily. Two developmental milestones that I have faced during my twenty-two years of life, thus far, are beginning college and ending college. Starting college in particular was a developmental milestone because it was different than anything I have ever experienced and for my family to experience as well. I am the first generation in my family to attend college. Both of my parents went straight into the work force after they graduated high school, and were not encouraged by their parents to attend college. I have two older siblings who decided not to attend college, because they wanted to go straight into the work force, and long term did not want to have to worry about paying back student loans.…
