In the dream, he saw an angel of the Lord who told him, ‘Joseph! Joseph! Be not afraid to take Mary as your wife because the child she is carrying is the Son of God.’ Joseph immediately got up out of bed and he thought of the dream. He decided to marry Mary.…
I was 15 when my father, and uncle Maffeo came back, and found out that Clement IV, the pope, had died. They stayed for two years. Waiting to see who the new pope would be, but we haven’t heard yet, so they decided to leave for the Mongol court, and they took me with them, and before we left, Teobaldo, a friend gave us letters to give to the Mongol emperor. A few days after being on our expedition, we heard that Teobaldo was elected pope as Gregory X. We went down to Acre to receive credentials, and two friars to help on our journey. As we proceeded up to Laiazzo, the friars left.…
King Arthur and Spiderman are two fictitious characters that are both similar, and dissimilar to each other. In an excerpt from Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces, he writes about monomyth, which is a twelve step process that is divided into four sections. This represents a continuous cycle that the character in the story must go through in order to complete their journey. King Arthur and Spiderman follow the cycle of the Heroes Journey by events in their lives made parallel to the cycle of the Heroes Journey. King Arthur and Spiderman, although from two different ends of the spectrum, are actually alike, both coming from epic tales of struggles and triumph.…
Joseph Campbell, the creator of the hero’s journey, did a lot of research on ancient mythology. He discovered that many heroes travel the same paths to becoming a hero. Campbell decided that heroes come across many challenges that are put into stages and in those stages the hero grows closer to the reward at the end. I am definitely not a hero, but my journey of finding Christ and giving my life to him has absolutely made me into a better person overall. As I look at my journey of finding Christ, I see that it has many similarities to Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.…
I felt that each video was helpful in its' own way. Personally, the 'What Makes A Hero' video was the most helpful/informative video for me. Basically, it explained the common Hero's journey archetype which takes place in many stories. Essentially, the hero in a story is the archetypal predecessor of all humankind in general. The modern day hero is a culmination our ancestors' experiences over many generations.…
I drove home and starting from the next day on I changed, got a job, helped my family get a house, and re-entered school. I finally got to be apart of my perfect image I had wanted for so…
A myth is a story that holds some kind of significance in a culture, a story that addresses fundamental and difficult questions that we as human beings ask: who or what am I, where did I come from, why am I here, how should I live, what is the right thing to do, what is the universe, how did it all begin? Myths are stories that are told about great men and great women; about the forces of good and evil; about large and small animals; about natural thing as well creatures like giants, gods and other supernatural beings. The complete study of all these stories theire respective elements is called mythology. Now when people hear the term mythology they automatically think of the Greek version, more specifically their gods such as Zeus the top-god,…

Sitting at my desk, I stared down at my schoolwork while my mind remained static. Suddenly, I found myself beginning to radiate golden light as my body faded from existence; then before I knew it, I rematerialized out of thin air. This does not happen often, so I was rather confused as I stood atop a cloud, high up in the sky. That is, until I noticed a large, human-like figure appear before me in a holy light. He raised his hands and smiled down at me before bellowing out, “Behold, for it is I; Gabe Newell!”…
It all began at the base of that hill. There I stood, unabashed by the ever-tensening knot in the bottom of my stomach. The epitome of all of my fears stared me down as i stood in the shadow of that majestic, towering, powerful mountain. The immense winter wind shook me to my core. In the Alps, there was no freedom from shivering.…
Long ago, there was a great war between the humans and darkness. The war lasted for many generations, and when all hope seemed lost, a light appeared in the darkness. A hero appeared, and with a sword of golden light, he drove out the evil and brought peace to the kingdom. Our story follows the path of a typical village boy named Cole.…
The term “hero” has been around since the late fourteenth century; however, the term is of an uncertain origin (Etymology, paragraph 2). Based upon controversial etymology beliefs, Webster’s Dictionary defines a ‘hero’ as an individual that is admired for his or her great acts or fine qualities. According to Joseph Campbell, the author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, an individual must go through the cycle of the hero 's journey. The life of a real life hero is reflected by the epic literary example “The Hero’s Journey” that is exhibited in the book The Hero with a Thousand Faces; therefore, a hero in today’s world must undergo the same twelve stages that are listed in “The Hero’s Journey.” The hero’s journey is known for telling…

I didn't sleep well last night. We had to get up at 5:00 in the morning so we could start warm ups before getting on the boat. The trip is going to take 4 days, so I'll only get one entry in before we get there. The ship isn't very big, and there is 752 of us. We have bunks to sleep in, and no showers.…
