I came into this course with very little background knowledge about health coaching and I was pleasantly surprised at how powerful this process can be. As a coach, I experienced success and setbacks throughout the process—both of which were crucial in learning to become a better health coach. From the beginning of the coaching process, my client and I achieved many successes. My client was motivated and willing to make a change, which is a major step in the coaching process. Some clients are unwilling to change or have little motivation to change, so I would argue that my client’s willingness to change laid the foundation for her successes throughout the coaching experience. I noticed how her motivation grew and how she was ambitious in her goal setting. It was inspiring for me to see how I was helping someone towards their vision simply by listening to them and asking questions about their goals. The only thing I disliked about this process was that it felt very rushed. I felt sometimes as if we were rushing through the session just to set three goals instead and ending up settling on certain goals or tweaking the goals from a previous week. I would consider myself very healthy and would probably not have chosen to see a health coach outside of class, however this may have caused some bias on my part during this experience. Because I may not have been as open to being a client as I was a coach, I feel as if I held back and did not reach my full potential as a client. After this experience as a client, I have realized that health coaching can be beneficial to anyone if they are fully committed—even if they are ‘healthy’. Health coaching can incorporate more than just physical health, but emotional, spiritual, and mental as well. These are areas in which anyone can improve in.
