My First Paper: A Shadow In The Woods

As I wrote my first paper for this class, A Shadow in the Woods, I found myself to be a bit nervous. I looked down at the notes I had taken and told myself that it was time to apply what I had learned. I knew that I had many things to avoid, such as comma splices, bad word choice and incorrect grammar. When I first received my graded paper, I grew worried because of how many red marks were on it. I was used to my high school teachers using a red pen to mark my mistakes. To my surprise, there was plenty of constructive criticism and compliments on my writing!
For starters, I saw that my MLA format was correct. I had used the template provided on Moodle as a guide. Throughout my prior years of school, I had used MLA format and was quite comfortable

Regardless, I can use my other resources such as a thesaurus and any synonym website.
I have been working on my transitions by using the Little Brown Book, the FANBOY and HOTSHOT method. I have found that it makes the paper flow better, and also gives it a more mature and professional sound to it. I did try to use a larger span of vocabulary, such as “diverse,” “deprived,” “conformity,” and “isolated.” Using a broader vocabulary showed me that I do not have to type the way I talk. I am able to put my thoughts down on paper while sounding like an educated college student.
There are many parts of this paper that I am proud of. I created a vivid image of what my childhood was like, including descriptive details such as how my family and I all lived on the same street. I allowed the reader to take a step inside of my shoes, and see what my life as a child was like. I described the hardships that my mother endured, as well as including the help she received from my family. I also think that my paragraphs flowed nicely together, creating a chronological order for the reader to

    1. The first issue with this analysis is the lack of supportive evidence. Since an analysis evaluates one source in depth, the author should have had more detailed recounts of the evidence he is trying to use to support his thesis. Much of the evidence that was used refers to nonspecific points in the plot, such as: “Michael’s delegation of the task of finding healthcare starts the unproductive process as he was primarily responsible for that task” (Smith, para. 4). The next issue is the lack of citations.…

There are many parts to what make The Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter such a well written and entertaining book, but there are three parts that really stand out. These are the plot, the characters, and the author’s writing style. The Light in the Forest is not only a joy to read, but also informs the reader about America’s horrible past with the Native Americans. John Cameron Butler is a white boy living with Indians. At age four he was stolen from his white family by Indians.…

Within my writing it would be hard for me to come up with transitions because when communicating with friends and family I never used transition words to formally communicate with others. Another way that limited me to write in proper English was computer and Internet communication like using abbreviated words like write lol in my papers that means laugh out loud. improper English in an academic setting was common for me due to constantly writing or texting to family and friends. Interacting with my community there was hardly…

In writing classes the most common first day question is whether or not spelling and grammar will count. Most commonly students focus more on how they are writing and if it is grammatically correct or not rather than writing their inner thoughts. Jack Connor in his essay, “Will Spelling Count?”, argues that writing requires meticulous efforts through his use of cause and effect, comparison and contrast, and division and classification. Connor displays cause and effect throughout his essay to show how different ways of teaching affect students performance and effort level. When Connor first began teaching he wanted to be a different type of teacher.…

I immediately jumped onto the computer to view your comments and feedback. A few items that stood out in your feedback to me were my topic sentences weren’t as strong as they could be; I had some grammatical errors with my commas verses semi colons and with fragmented sentences. I spent my next few essays improving these items. When you were generous and offered us the option to improve one of our assignments I jumped at the chance to prove to myself that I could improve my essay and as a bonus I was able to finally achieve the A grade I wanted. Looking back at the changes in my writing style and the expansion of my knowledge on the different types of writing while taking your class has improved my skills and I find myself enjoying the writing process from beginning to end albeit only in your class, and only when I have an assignment due.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

On May 20, 2016, my adviser and I sat down to have a discussion about the university required courses and courses that was mandatory for the Liberal Arts college. English 101 was one of the classes I chose to take my first semester because I knew I had more knowledge on writing efficient papers because of my previous AP English courses in high school. In high school, I was always told that I was an adequate writer because I knew the basic of connecting ideas that provided a clear concrete understanding. However, the only time I received an unsatisfactory score was when the information I included in my paper was unorganized. Also, another reason I chose to take English my first semester instead of my second semester was because I knew I needed…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Edwin Land once said, “An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail.” In the two different writing, both authors come from very different backgrounds, but have similar messages. Amy Tan talks about not being afraid to do what you love, even if people tell you that you should major in something else. Anne Lamott discusses how you should not be afraid to write your first draft of a paper, it is suppose to be horrible. In her essay, “Mother Tongue”, Amy Tan discusses the hardships with her and her mother’s types of English, while in “Crummy First Drafts”, Anne Lamott talks about getting over your fears when writing the first draft of a paper; both of the authors essays vary in structure and tone, but have similar styles and purposes…

Prior to English 101, I have been taking several English classes, but each class helped me little by little to an English 101 student. Learning to have efficient studying habits such as study the day of the class and not doing things last minute. Also learning how to actually study other subjects and how to think critically. This has increased my learning habits. My student habits have changed dramatically,…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

Every Saturday, I distinctly recall the smell of pancakes, bacon, and eggs. The radio would be playing in the background, masked by the overwhelming chatter occurring throughout the house. So many things happening in such a small space: what I remember most, is the sound of laughter, and the smiles that surrounded me. My grandpa hollering because he cannot hear the television, my mother still drowsy from the sleepless night, My grandmother singing to the radio that was barely audible over the commotion, and me, invariably sat looking at all that surrounded me, enthralled at how lucky I was to have a heart so full.…
