My Field Placement

Throughout the time that I have spent within my field placement, the teacher has allotted various small increments of time for vocabulary. The teacher usually spends less than five minutes discussing vocabulary that the students will see in a new book or when there is a question about a new vocabulary word. If the teacher is introducing multiple new words, she will spend between ten to fifteen minutes introducing the words, explaining the definitions of the words (and explaining which definition fits the best for the circumstance), and allowing students to make connections with the words. Once the teacher introduces the new words, she puts the new words on the word wall. This allows the students to reference the word wall throughout the day. Some of the materials that the teacher uses to promote literacy include specific content books, words presented visually, a word wall, a smart board, and dictionaries. When the teacher wants to focus on a particular subject, vocabulary list, or theme, she will use the specific content books. By doing so, students are able to see the spelling of the words and become engaged by putting the words on the word wall for …show more content…
In order to do so, the teacher splits the students into groups and assigns the groups to a listening center, smart board center, or a poetry center. Within the listening center are oral literacy games, literacy through art work (projects), and paired reading assignments (oral assignment). The smart board center includes working on spelling words on the smart board and reading a big book on the smart board. Finally, the poetry center includes literacy through math work, word work, and guided reading. When the students are writing, they are encouraged to look through a book of synonyms to use new, higher order words to improve their writing. This process of refining what was written occurs in the revising stage of their

“Revising” In Joseph Harris’s article, “Revising”, Harris emphasizes the differences between drafting, revising, and editing, and the impact that each of these elements has on drafting a well-written paper. Harris dubbs the first step “drafting”, or formulating the content of the paper. Drafting involves the development of ideas into a larger body of text that can be easily followed. The next step in this process is “revising”, or further developing and adjusting the current body of text. Harris reaffirms that revising is not simply editing for spelling in grammar, but rather revising focuses on building upon the text that is already developed.…

I chose to record a 25-minute whole group, English Language Arts lesson that focused on the 7-Steps Vocabulary strategy and Sentence Frames. This lesson focused on two selected terms (play and dip) from the targeted story “Pig in a Wig.” As I began the lesson, I activated students’ prior knowledge by asking students if they remembered the two words that they learned the previous week. Students were able to recall the terms and their definition and were able to remember the way those words were introduced to them. I began explaining to students that they would be introduced to two new words from a new story we would begin reading the following day.…

Mary Beth Stevens suggests writing supports reading by asking students to draw upon common knowledge and thinking processes (2014). In the Texas Treasures Literature curriculum students continually respond to text through writing activities. At the end of each section they record their responses by writing a personal response. These responses require critical and higher order thinking skills because students answer open-ended questions and utilize summarization, inference and interpreting meaning skills. This allows students to explore their own thoughts and make connections to the text.…

In order to prepare for writing a summary of Joseph Harris’s “Revising”, I first felt it was necessary to skim through the article once again to refresh my memory of the article. After re-reading the article, I tried to identify the main idea that Harris was trying to communicate. I believed that the main point could be identified through Harris’s emphasis on the fact that revising is not just correcting grammatical errors, but rather seeking out these errors was a part of a larger whole. I also referenced our in class discussion to identify the other main points of the article. From there, I worked on a general idea of what I would talk about in my summary and made note of what order I would do that in.…

From my point of view, when organizing the ideal emergent literacy environment, it is very important to begin the process by getting to know the students' background, likes, interests, and level of knowledge proceed with the accommodations and strategies to make these students feel very welcome. Therefore, I like to always emphasize the classroom rules and the respect in the classroom. Then, one good activity as the ice breaks between students and to emerge literacy could start with the students’ name. Also, this way, with the students’ name, a word wall can be started to build, which also helps the students to write their names, association of upper and lower case letters, and to introduce, sounds of the letters. In addition, the use of academic posters, classroom objects, signs; as well, the class routines with vocabulary;…

Content area literacy is an important part of a students’ literacy development. My definition is that it is the part of literacy that helps students comprehend different subjects and the information that comes with the content. A student will not be completely successful if they do not fully understand what they are supposed to be learning. This puts a great deal of pressure on our shoulders as teachers to make sure our students can read and write successfully in all content areas. My past experiences with content area literacy has not all been positive.…
