This past year a boy counselor made a statement that really stood out to me during his speech. He said, “I think you make better friends without the internet”. This made me realize how lucky I am to have grown up along my camp friends without a cellphone. The connection I have with my camp friends is so much deeper than my school friends. If I get bored in the cabin, me and my camp friends can think of fun things to do. Like jumping off our water cabin into the lake to shower or having a tetherball tournament before chow. When I’m with my school friends, the first thing any of us turn to when we are bored is our cellphones. The next speakers were two girl counselors who were sisters. They talked about how going to Camp Longhorn along with their younger sister, who was still a camper at the time, has impacted their family. I felt that their story was so relatable to my family camp experience. My eldest sister, Faris, joined Camp Longhorn in 2005, them my middle sister,Elle, joined Camp Longhorn in 2009, and the finally I joined Camp Longhorn in 2012. We all went to Camp together for the next 4 years! In 2016, Faris had to leave for college the day after we left for camp.
