The flight to South Korea felt like it took forever and I became more anxious as we approached Pyeongchang. I kept thinking to myself, “ I can't believe that I'm going to the Olympics to represent my country.” 12 hours later, my flight landed in Pyeongchang, and I disembarked off the plane to go and find my luggage and the transportation to the games.
About three days passed before the opening ceremony. I grew more anxious and excited as the countries were announced one by one. Finally, they called the United States of America and every athlete from my country started to walk forward into the sea of crowds from all over the world. I'll never forget walking with my teammates into the enormous arena to a thunder of cheering.
Four days later, the preliminary games for ice hockey began. The first game was for team USA and me. We were against a powerhouse in hockey, Sweden. As the game started, I felt very nervous to be playing against opponents that had lots of experience in Olympic ice hockey, but as the game progressed I became more confident in my ability. Half way through the first period of play, I led a rush up the ice and passed it to one of my more experienced teammates and he one-timed it past the goalie. Just like that, we were up one to nothing in the game. As the game continued, the opposition scored twice to take the lead five minutes into the third period. With two minutes in the third period, the score was tied at two. This was every American hockey athlete’s dream in the Olympics, to face Canada for the gold. The game began with a fast pace and before I knew it the score was still 0-0, with two minutes left in the game. As the final seconds tick by, both teams knew it would be decided by a single goal in sudden death overtime. It began with a few rushes by Canada, but as soon as they shot the puck, I was heading the other way for a breakaway. As I was about to shoot, the opposing player hooked me, causing me to miss on the shot, but was called by the ref, resulting in a penalty shot in overtime. I started to skate towards the goalie and contemplated what I should do, as the game was on my stick literally. I decided to try to deke the goalie out of position and it worked. As I shot the puck, the goalie tried to save it, but barely missed saving it, as the puck hit the back of the net and the light flashed. The game was over as my teammates piled on me, congratulating me on my goal. I thought, “I just won the gold medal for my
